Re: rangtong vs. zhentong
prasangika=analytically findable on the side of the object aka inherent existence, etcetc) Hi 5heaps, As far as I know, the opposite is asserted by the Prasangika. The object is "un-findable" upon investigation, as it is neither the same as (nor other than) its parts. It is mere designati...

Re: ‘Unfriending’ annoying people hurts their feelings
There's an "acquaintance" setting you can park people on so that you don't need to un-friend them. You don't then get to see their posts, which can be a relief.

Re: Buddhist Scholar Paul Williams Conversion to Catholicism
That sums it up. He is scared of his annihilation and Christianity promises him a 'life after death'. I can understand his concern and hope he is happy now. Wrong view but his call.it is simply, quite straightforwardly, the end of me.

Re: Advice, suggestion, guidance, anything?
I lost the light, the belief, the faith, and the endeavor in my Buddhist practice. Hi Bodhi, It looks like you lost the 'endeavor' because is was being sustained by belief and faith. There may be a big element of those in the traditions you followed, then the bubble burst... Time to re-evaluate wha...

Good point JD. As Lisehull said, thanks for the reminder.Johnny Dangerous wrote:in the first book he says that self-generation as the deity or meditation on the deity actually can actually be a form of Shamatha

Re: Secrecy in Vajrayana
Now, if none of your fellow practitioners is ever talking about his/her own experiences, you'll never know if anyone of them is actually benefiting from this practice at all. In the Theravada tradition for example, people are urged not to talk about their personal progress as well, but (at least in...

Re: Kundalini Awakening vs Buddhist Awakening
Are these the same or different? If there is some overlap between them, to what extent does this extend? I have heard that some Tibetan Vajrayana practices incorporate energy work (i.e. Tummo), but does this have the same goals as Kundalini Yoga? What about other, non Tibetan or non Vajrayana tradt...

Re: Meeting spirits in real life
Is there the possibility of meeting Buddhist spirits in your real life, for example spirits that tell you things? I ask because I believe in paranormal activity and that this phenomenon might happen to anyone... I've only ever "sensed" a handful of things that I might consider 'spirits'. ...

an analytical realization of what to give up at the current level and what specifically to take up . There is nothing to be "taken up" as there is nothing to acquire. Sure you need clarity and awareness to see what's going on but it's non-discursive, visceral and direct. It's a process of...

Re: Sam Harris on Buddhism
The Buddha sounds a bit like Aristotle. Don't know Aristotle either. self or âtma is the substance. What kind of substance? What is an attribute like material shape, feeling, perception, habitual tendencies and consciousness, are not substance ( anâtman ). I'm interested in how you define &...

Re: Sam Harris on Buddhism
Nice post. Some helpful background. The Buddha does not deny the self (which in Pali is natthatta ). He denies that the five grasping aggregates are the self, e.g., material shape, the first aggregate, is not the self. No self to be found within the five aggregates, rather like the simile of the cha...

Re: Why was E-Sangha controversial?
It's hard to get the balance right, especially if the mods don't know anything about new members. Some people join sites to troll or push some weird agenda of their own, in which case (after a warning etc) they should be banned. I've seen a few sites where just about anything goes and it's not prett...

Re: Sam Harris on Buddhism
In evaluating Sam's stance it helps if we take note of what he considers to be the final result: One starts with the hypothesis that using attention in the prescribed way (meditation), and engaging in or avoiding certain behaviors (ethics), will bear the promised result (wisdom and psychological wel...

Re: Why was E-Sangha controversial?
I was on it many years ago. There were some very knowledgeable members but towards the end the atmosphere became quite repressive and dark. I ultimately used it as a read-only resource or to pose the blandest of possible questions. It was never worth venturing your own opinion. I moved on, so I didn...

Re: stopping thought completely
Alot of times I feel like calm abiding is disturbed by thoughts about non-thought, or self-referencing thoughts about mediation..if that makes any sense. Hi Johnny, It's good that you're aware of what's going on. I guess I need to just relax a bit. Yeah but you can't 'force' yourself to relax, so a...

Re: Conventional & Ultimate Truth
Partless particle is absurd. Hey, I didn't think this stuff up. Blame the Svatrantikas. The first 50% you dismiss the existence. The last 50% you acknowledge the existence. We just contradicting ourselves. Paperless particle is then absurd. Not really, there is a sound basis behind this theory. Sva...

Re: Conventional & Ultimate Truth
If we acknowledge even conventionally that things has no intrinsic existence (no basis), how can we still say conventionally things exist? This is like trying to say "This corner has no color. But it is red". If this corner has no color, you should say there is no red. Hi Darwid, The Pras...
