Re: Believing in a Christian God

Apart from the observation that Buddh-ist is a construct that may or may not be useful, I have nothing to add. I have no need for you to see things the way that I do. :namaste: That's cool. I was just trying to wrap my head around a statement that effectively goes: an apple is an orange because the...

Re: Believing in a Christian God

If I can interject here Herbie...the working definition of a Buddhist..a follower of the Buddhadharma, that I have is rather more focused. A Buddhist is someone that has formally Gone For Refuge to the Buddha Dharma and Sangha, and who has a recognised teacher in one of the historical lineages who ...

Re: Believing in a Christian God

In Buddhism, any surrender is only expedient and temporary. The final goal is liberation from all dependencies, i.e., true independence. And you take your place as a Victorious One and become a source of refuge for others who have yet to achieve liberation. In Abrahamic religions, surrender is abso...

Re: Obsessive Thoughts

My son has OCD. I recently listened to a great program on NPR (American public radio) on "Dark Thoughts". Specifically about Harm OCD, but it seems the treatment might have broader application: http://www.npr.org/2015/01/09/375928124/dark-thoughts I liked that part of the treatment seemed ...

Re: Monastic vows

it's easy enough to find fault if that's what we want to find. it's easy enough to find the lack of perfection. it's easy enough to be chuffed at these things, but what's the point? The only person who carries that is ourself. Why burden ourselves with that? We are in samsara and dealing with human ...

Re: Alcohol

"don't drink as soon as it has effects on the dharma practice and personal behaviour". Because "savely" is a very elastic term these are two very separate things, though they may have a substantial degree of overlap. I'm posting here on Dharmawheel - what effect does that have o...

Re: Dalai Lama Quotation: No Crazy Wisdom Masters

Well actually Uan thats pretty much what CTR DID say..everyday.. This idea that he was forever arranging pranks which led to insight, or undermining our self sense with clever paradox is fantasy. I don't know much about CTR, but I've read some of his writings and have found them to be extremely ins...

Re: Dalai Lama Quotation: No Crazy Wisdom Masters

Well I observed up close one who was described as a Crazy Wisdom Master over several years...and what is seldom discussed is the fact that 98% of the time his behaviour was no different to any other Kagyu teacher or possibly higher. If you look closely at many of the historical stories that have an...

Re: Dalai Lama Quotation: No Crazy Wisdom Masters

I guess the issue still is what is Crazy Wisdom? I'll start by using the Wikipedia version: refers to unconventional, outrageous, or unexpected behavior, being either a manifestation of buddha nature and spiritual teaching (enlightened activity, Wylie: phrin'las)[2] on the part of the guru,[3] or a ...

Re: Dalai Lama Quotation: No Crazy Wisdom Masters

Of course there are no Crazy Wisdom Masters...there never were . That includes CTR. Although the myth suited CTR's wider agenda. Its nevertheless all a myth beloved of the kind of person that loves reading books about the Vajrayana in order to feel naughty. Really? Could you elaborate, or do you ha...

Re: sex and romance

There are 7 billion people on the planet. If 1% reach enlightenment in this lifetime, that's 70 million people. Is it .1%? That's 7 million people. .01% That's 700,000 people. I have no clue what the number is, but I'm sure it's pretty small - or else I'd never hear that phrase that gets brought up...

Re: sex and romance

How come, if sex and romantic relationships (e.g. marriage) will clearly cause misery as romantic relationships are one of the biggest material attachments, do some buddhists (including teachers) participate? have you ever been married? :rolling: We tend to project onto others from our own conceptu...

You are utilising arguments from mundane philosophy and implying that they can and should be applied also the Buddhadharma. We need look no further than your statement about the ' weakness ' of argument from authority...no matter how applicable that is to mundane matters...and no doubt it is in tha...

Re: Last judgement

In Buddhism, to be independent is to be free. To be subjected to dependencies is to be in bondage What is independent? Does it matter if one believes in a creator God or not? So there's no God, there is no predestination, etc. You are totally on your own. As is each of us. Does that make you free? ...

Re: Last judgement

That is probably true for some sects of Christianity but definitely not all. Many believe one is saved entirely through grace -- it doesn't matter how hard one tries or not. Ah, but many do not know that they are made to suffer entirely through grace as well. Personally, I'd rather be "gracele...

Re: Last judgement

Buddhadharma has nothing at all to say about ' unconditional love '...beyond the fact that it is a concept at odds with some basic Buddhist concepts. Note, there is no suggestion here that compassion and loving kindness are anything other than vital to the actualisation of Dharma...but that is not ...

Re: Last judgement

There are a couple ways to think about Christianity. In one sense, its cosmology is as fantastical (not real) as Jedi Knights and the Force, or something out of the Lord of the Rings. It may have Richard Dawkins (I'm not sure), who said everyone's an atheist except for the one religion they believe ...
