Re: An interesting academic analysis of Diamond Way
No one is really going to argue that the title of "Lama" in the Kagyu tradition is reserved for practitioners (lay or monastic) who complete a traditional 3 year retreat. Correct?? So the fact that he has given himself the title "Lama" without such credentials is troubling is it...
Re: Ngondro
Dear ngondronewbie, Just because your ngondro practice is not satisfying your expectations does not mean it is not bringing results. Clinging to your experiences from other practices is not going to help you progress. The harder to try to achieve the effect, the more you anticipate it, the less opp...

Re: An interesting academic analysis of Diamond Way
I `m in touch with Lama Ole Nydhal and DW centers since 1996, when I took Refuge with him. Like Kelwin, I decided at some point, that I would rather prefer to deepen my understanding of Dharma, as I have no problem with more traditional approach to Dharma. I do not agree with some of ON views, and ...

Re: An interesting academic analysis of Diamond Way
A question for the DW students on this thread (honestdboy, Willy and any others). What direction do you see DW going in the future - especially after Ole is gone. I am sure now the Ole is getting on people are considering it. Does he have an appointed successor? I'm not sure. He mentioned in the pa...

Re: An interesting academic analysis of Diamond Way
I have attended about 7 talks by Lama Ole. Maybe he mentioned Islam briefly in 2 of the talks warning about its lack of tolerance--nothing so harsh and really not said with any anger. People make it sound like he's on a soapbox giving long angry speeches and getting actively involved in far right-w...

Re: An interesting academic analysis of Diamond Way
Did these guys just look like skinheads, or were they actually neo-nazis? That's quite a difference. Excellent point! As I get older, I feel I look better with short hair. When I get older, I guess I will look like a skinhead or a monk--hopefully I won't get called a neo-nazi if I continue working ...

Re: Autism
I often felt that if I was a recluse, I would no longer be autistic. The disability only exists when I have to interact with people on their terms, while they have no understanding for my terms. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I sometimes wonder if autism is a result of balancing out on behalf...

Re: Phowa Benefits
Interesting... I know some of the people on the thread- and was in NYC at that time... definitely deja vu. It doesn't surprise me that Rinpoches and buddhist masters in the past have performed phowa for colonies of ants. What does surprise me is that they would recommend this to their students. I'm ...

Just a little history question here guys....Lingpupa wrote: Are you sure about that? The Jewel Ornament doesn't discuss things like ngondro.
Was the ngondro put together by the 9th karmapa? I can't remember -
What's the history of the ngondro?

Re: Phowa Benefits
Just to bring it back to the question I was making a stab at (I'm not claiming to know the reason for sure). There is the case of a woman who unskillfully did phowa for others. She had the transmission to do the practice with all the signs etc. But obviously didn't listen to some advice. To do the p...

Re: Phowa Benefits
I think the shorter life idea comes from doing Phowa for others, not the practice itself. It's beneficial for everyone if the practitioner has a strong connection to the newly departed- and the dead person should have an interest in Buddhism. But I have heard a story about a woman who was doing pho...

Hi The Khyentse Foundation's latest communique has an obituary of Gerard Godet, a western practitioner who showed signs of realisation at the time of his death, remaining in thugdam for a week: http://khyentsefoundation.com/2011/10/patron-kings-part-xiii/" onclick="window.open(this.href);...

My experience with an autistic student (I teach painting): Last summer I taught a student that has autism and was impressed how this student could jump into his paintings with vigor, intelligence and bypass some of the hesitancies of his classmates. Despite this young man’s inability to describe his...

Re: Cops raid at the Karmapas office
I thought discussion on of the karmapa controversy was somewhat not allowed on these forums, since it's neverending, hurtful to people's practice and doesn't seem to lead to any conclusions. I have my own views on this matter, but I wish there would be some place to discuss it and I wish the kagyu ...

Re: Cops raid at the Karmapas office
HHDL said something to the effect of congrats and you have my blessing. After the conflict came out publicly, HHDL found himself in an awkward position, but could not go back on his word. It was never meant to be a recognition though. Historically that wouldn't make any sense. You make HHDL sound l...

Re: Cops raid at the Karmapas office
Yes, indeed. A lot is going on and there are Lamas doing a great job, East and West. Don't want to look overly pessimistic. I have the deepest appreciation for HH the Dalai Lama and his decisions. Let there be no mistake about it. Just one thing though. When you say "He has taken steps...
