Re: indian food

I really love Keralan food. If you have a halfway decent Indian grocery nearby it's surprisingly easy to replicate the flavours at home. Unfortunately my better half loathes curry leaves but I've found that lemon balm (melissa) makes a very good substitute. The one thing I didn't really get when we ...

Re: Buddhist parenting

Welcome, Cheryl. As the parent of three adopted children, I can say that it's an amazing thing you are about to do. Challenging, terrifying, wonderful, life-affirming... Pretty much all-encompassing, really. If I could give you one single piece of advice, it would be to let go of all your preconcept...

Re: Scientific Evidence for Rebirth

I hover between skepticism and the experientially reinforced suspicion that individual consciousness arises in all pervading, beginningless and endless mind like a ripple in water, is reabsorbed, rises again. Which, as Huseng says, is unlikely to be provable under laboratory conditions... ...althoug...

Re: Ole Nydahi and Trungpa rinpoche

Your main concern should be whether the group you choose is going to deliver authentic dharma teachings to you as their main and indeed only priority. I don't know very much about either of these two organizations but it's plain that a good deal of their energies go into maintaining their distinct i...

Re: Would you say that mdma experience of all out love is valid?

If you take a drug experience as a touchstone for spiritual practice, you will always be trying to recreate something artificial. At the very best, it will be like taking the most perfect food and slathering it with MSG. Or staying indoors and watching a sunset on Youtube while the world is glowing ...

Malcolm was saying things that people didn't want to hear. DW is beginning to manifest the same anger, aggression, cultural and intellectual xenophobia that is afflicting the world outside. Inevitable and understandable, but a bloody shame nevertheless.

Not the most interesting story, but it is mine. I think it is an excellent story! I remember as a child flicking through a brand new encyclopedia my parents had brought for me (encyclopedias were fashionable back then since there was no interent (and/or Google) and I stumbled across a...

Re: What do you sit on during meditation?

Outside I sit on a folded towel on whatever rock or log takes my fancy. Indoors I use whatever comes to hand - a rolled-up camping mat at the moment. This is more a result of being broke than hardcore asceticism... Though whenever I've sat on a 'proper' meditation cushion I've found them extremely a...

Re: Buddhism without a teacher

You will read the numerous wrong views from devils who can spout some dharma words but have no teacher, no lineage and no realization. Trust and believe that the spiritual friend is the entire path. Hum, isn't it also true - equally as true - that the teacher is not the first person to come along. ...

Re: Buddhism without a teacher

"find a teacher and you will know". This is true. But teachers come in many, many forms. I practiced for a few years without a teacher and now I've found one. I don't think my teacherless years were spent in the wilderness at all. Every experience was valuable. The books I read informed m...

Re: Bates method, natural vision improvement -- discard glasses

Floaters aren't imaginary, btw. They are imperfections in the vitreous humour. Quite an interesting phenomenon in themselves. The eyes seem to be one of the last areas of the body to relax. The body scan technique helps. Certainly relaxing the muscles of the face works. In my limited and humble expe...

You might indeed have a few problems with that on a Buddhist forum.

Re: Thamal gyi shepa vs. baby rigpa vs. rigpa (etc.)

Out of interest, did you follow ChNNR's last retreat? If so, you received direct introduction. I would suggest downloading the Guruyoga book here: http://www.shangshungstore.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=455 . Then you'd have a complete practice to be getting on with. Having spent quite a bit...

You are not alone: you are deeply connected to everyone and everything. Don't let loving-kindness be contrived and conditioned by circumstance. Just let it flower.

I'd also add: relax. Relax, relax, relax and keep on relaxing. :namaste: Thanks, that's a valuable addition. As I mentioned, I'm happy to relax -- particularly if I know I am not on a completely mistaken path! (And relaxing while doing this on retreat for the past few weeks seems to be doing someth...

We know there are differences of opinion on ngondro, etc. You are wrong on both counts. Are there differing opinions on rigpa (or whatever the translation du jour is - maybe I've just answered the question...)? We are told rigpa is not a matter of semantic, cognition, concepts etc. but of ineffable...
