I prefer sitting in a leather chair. I don't condone killing cows though.

Re: Hello from a monk in Calgary, AB Canada
Hello all. I'm a recently ordained monastic, a getsul (novice) in the Karma Kagyu (17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje). I was ordained by the Very Venerable 9th Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche at Thrangu Monastery Canada in Richmond BC in the Summer of 2016. I'm not a new practitioner, but as far as monks ...

Re: what the buddha didn't teach
Is there a good book or article that lists all the things added to Buddhism that wasn't originally taught by the first buddha? I know there is a book on what he taught( "what the buddha taught"). Does that book tell specifically all the things that were later added by chance? Maybe I real...

Once you get up to R40 insulation and use passive solar gain you can heat with wood ecologically again. Half a cord a year for a family of 4 in the Canadian bush. Making your own power and growing your own food is a much better idea than buying gold, diversifying your portfolio or pretending your p...

Re: Are Tibetans racist?
Did Dzongsar khyentse say this? And what did he mean? "If there was an award for being the most racist, Tibetans would win every year " Who cares if they are? Why are you asking this? i care, because racism is a root problem in this century Racism will always exist in some form amongst al...

Re: The attainment of the Arhats
Why couldn't Shakyamuni just mention this in the early texts if this was actually the case? I gues you're using "early texts" to mean "Pali texts". The idea that there was one set of early material which we now call the Pali Canon and everything else is a later invention is not ...

Re: The attainment of the Arhats
So Arhats are reborn when it finishes? That can't be right. Or then cease to exist, in which case the original question I asked isn't answered. They are roused from samadhi, and are set upon the bodhisattva path. Why couldn't Shakyamuni just mention this in the early texts if this was actually the ...

Re: Transgender, Gender and Gay issues
I understand this is a sensitive issue for many so I won't add any of my own opinions but here are a couple wise quotes by the Buddha: "The uprooting of identity is seen by the noble ones as pleasurable; but this contradicts what the whole world sees." (Snp 3.12) “One to whom it might occu...

No, a stream enterer is free from the fetter of attachment to wrong views. Such a person is not bound by the aggregates A stream-enterer is still bound by the three poisons, hence attached to the aggregates. Having correct view is the beginning, not the end, and that's why there is a need for culti...

Wrong according to who? What my Teacher said was not false as evidenced by Buton Rinchen Drub. Having said that, we can't just rely on literal translations of scriptures, we also have to use our intelligence and experience of Dharma, as well as our Teacher's direct instructions. It's a very loose i...

Re: The attainment of the Arhats
TKF you are very mistaken on this. Read the actual suttas where the Buddha talks about arahats rather than going by what your teacher says. That's the best advice I can give you. :) This is not very good advice, at least not as written. If TKF's teachers are traditional, then this is very bad advic...
