Re: mostly Raw organic vegan diet for mental health?
I don't actively practice Tibetan medicine any more, but in Tibetan Medicine and Ayurveda, this view of illness is not favored. If there is an effect, there must be a cause. If the cause is not addressed—and some causes cannot be addressed in the case of karmic illnesses, for example—the effect can...

Re: mostly Raw organic vegan diet for mental health?
Proper diagnostics must account for causes. There are all kinds of idiopathic diseases which are defined primarily by symptoms. Correct. And for many mental health conditions, the cause becomes somewhat irrelevant to both the patient and practitioner. The damage is already done, and - save for case...

Samyé Ling Home Study Dharma Course
I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience or knowledge of the Home Study Dharma Course offered by Ken Holmes at Samyé Ling in Scotland. Some of you may recall discussing FPMT online courses with me previously, and despite Samyé Ling being the closest dharma centre to me (I stay just outside Ed...

Re: mostly Raw organic vegan diet for mental health?
Is this a joke? I am a therapist and studied this. I never heard this. Also your case study with one brain damaged individual is no evidence. I too was sceptical regarding the labelling of OCD as a seizure disorder. Granted, it is brain-based. But then if we compare epilepsy (truly a seizure disord...

Re: mostly Raw organic vegan diet for mental health?
Don’t you mean releasing too much dopamine, then not letting it replenish (through dopamine-fasting (where you do literally nothing for 24 hours or more (although you might as well meditate during this time)) for example)? I don’t think you can have too much dopamine or serotonin. No, I don't. I ex...

Re: mostly Raw organic vegan diet for mental health?
More dopamine being released by a given does not simply mean “better for you”, and the idea that it does evinces a really basic misunderstanding of the function of dopamine. I'm really glad you mentioned that. In terms of mood disorders "too much" dopamine or serotonin can be a very bad t...

Re: Deepen Your Daily Practice with Khenpo Samdup Rinpoche (many transmissions from Drikung Kagyu Practice Book)
I wonder, would this be suitable for someone like me? I have taken Refuge (from a lovely karma kagyu lama) some years ago, although circumstances including coronavirus have prevented me from deepening that connection. I'm a bit of a lamrim aficionado, but that's just because I find it easy to unders...

pronunciation of refuge name
When I took Refuge a long time ago I was given the name ཀརྨ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་ (karma chos kyi blo gros) The first word I understand, and doesn't confuse me. But the rest I have seen written as Choji Lodro, but also Chökyi Lodrö. My questions are: how is the ji or kyi pronounced (kyi)? And the umlaut...

Re: Hello from the UK
Hello from Scotland (Edinburgh precisely)! Welcome to the forum. I hope you gain much from visiting here. Incidentally, I too found helpful teachings (so conveniently close*) from the group we don't mention - and years before from Michael Roach's ACI. Much better to find alternatives that present au...

Re: Taking Refuge formally
Thank you, Lhaksam Dorje. No, don't worry, I didn't think I was just taking refuge in - in this instance - the karma kagyu school. I was more worried that years of not practicing, and no doubt breaking refuge commitments, had kind of undone everything. I like my refuge name; although, whilst I can w...

Re: Taking Refuge formally
Thank you, both of you. I’m Karma Kagyu, but if you find Kagyu impenetrable you should go with LamRim. I just find it much easier to understand. I remember as a Uni student sitting with books I had got from Samyé Ling, and not understanding them! I hope you didn't take it as any kind of slight. It's...

Re: Taking Refuge formally
Refuge is your passport to any legitimate form of Buddhism. FPMT is fine. In fact, you should suspect any tradition that claims you owe them fealty. That is very good advice indeed. Although there is part of me that thinks that because Samyé Ling (and the city Samyé Dzong) are so much closer that p...

Taking Refuge formally
(My apologies if this should maybe be in one of the sub-forums; I wasn't sure) I've been interested in Tibetan Buddhism since I was 19 (I'm now 41), and a number of years back I finally took Refuge at a beautiful Kagyu centre nearby. They even gave me a beautiful dharma name, as you can see. Unfortu...

Re: "HEART SON" Who can use this title?
I agree that some prudent investigation ought to be done by persons who wish to take instruction from someone, but this appears more than that. Why spend so much time on this, Harold? There's more that can be done with your life than this! Lucky you that you're retired from policing (I'm still at th...

Re: Stress on syllables
I was waiting to see if someone else would answer this one, but no-one has.... :tantrum: Regarding Sugata, I have heard it both ways, but more often with the stress on the su and the ga , but not on the ta . (if that makes sense) Just remember, though, in Sanskrit that a in the middle is a short a –...
