Re: Rigpa vs. Alaya (continued)
I’m not sure what the original question was, or where we’ve drifted to in this conversation. I guess my point was - this distinction is a basic Dzogchen praxis point. Everyone should know the attributes of rigpa and how it’s different from the all-basis from a theoretical perspective. From a practi...

Re: Poll (ANONYMOUS): Are you Male / Female / Other?
Very interesting. That seems pretty reasonable based on my experience, although like I said, that is very limited. I'm doing a research methods class at the moment (just undergrad stuff, not too much real research); I'm tempted to start thinking about how one might really research this. Seems diffi...

Re: Love
love in buddhism is unconditional love. as HHDL put it: "love is the absence of judgement". it is very important and IMHO hugely underestimated my western students who mostly concentrate on the nature of mind teachings/wisdom side of buddhism, omitting the compassionate/love side. i beliv...

Re: Poll (ANONYMOUS): Are you Male / Female / Other?
Yeah, why so many dudes? Or, alternatively, why so few ladies? This came up on another Buddhist group I'm on, mostly men, which does not seem to reflect irl buddhism (so I hear, tbh I don't interact with buddhist groups irl much, but I do participate online, ...I don't know if that is related or no...

Re: Vajrayana in the spectrum
...ergo neutotypical individuals, can only know about it indirectly due to obvious reasons. I have been working as a psychologist for 30 years (with really serious cases too) and during that time and my time in society I have yet to meet a person that is "neurotypical". I have yet to meet...

Re: My family worries that some Zen Buddhism feels like a “cult”
People with no spiritual practice often think anything involving devotion and discipline “looks like a cult.” Yes, it could be something like this. If they are not familiar with spiritual practice or eastern religions, they might find something simple as chanting as being "cultish" which ...

Re: Rigpa vs. Alaya (continued)
A good clarification here would be whether or not rigpa is synonymous with the -purified-alaya, such as is described in the Lankavatara.

I think one of the positives of anonymity is that you can only approach people by their words. That’s good for a Buddhist forum in my opinion.

Re: My family worries that some Zen Buddhism feels like a “cult”
Hi everyone! I have been very taken by Zen Buddhism and particularly the teachings of Suzuki Roshi. His words have moved me incredibly. That said, speaking to my family about some of these topics and the story of Suzuki Roshi moving to San Francisco, the drama that eventually happened there…there i...

Re: The metaphorical character of the Dhamma.
Yes, I read Tipitaka and came to this conclusion because I have an agnostic bias (I am an agnostic), and honestly with this bias I gained many benefits for practical life, with the literal view in my case this would not be possible. You read the Tripitaka but not did accurately recall the Sutta you...

Re: The metaphorical character of the Dhamma.
Most certainly in the Pali Canon multiple realms, rebirth, etc. are taught as regular features, say nothing of Mahayana sources. Saying “oh well it’s because he was teaching to Hindus” is a poor claim and not one that even many secular scholars would take seriously- even if it confirmed their own be...

Re: Poll idea - who is your teacher
I think this is not a particularly great idea, for a number of reasons. If you want to connect with other students of certain teachers it’s probably best just to ask. For example, it is easy to assume there are many followers of ChNNR here. But how many followers of Khandro Rinpoche or Dolpo Tulku R...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching
I was once forced in a class (seriously) to watch The Secret, which is sort of the “root text” of a lot of that garbage. Me too, last semester! We talked about it a bit before my class started. My class, honestly, ended up being really good. Regardless of differences of opinion, the teacher was ver...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching
One of my teachers is a Tibetan also trained in Western psych and therapy. He actually has adopted some of the horizontal “Western”teaching style. I have another ethnically Tibet teacher who has done the same. I feel like despite being very traditional in some ways ChNN had a style favorably dispose...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching
Genuinely curious as to what type of class would show that. You don't strike me as the sort of person who studies in Liberty U or similar places... I don’t think Liberty U would show it, it’s more a new age thing. It looks like there’s some family looking movie called the secret vaguely based on it...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching
But the majority of younger seekers will be drawn to youtube videos and all-inclusive, universalist mindfulness type things, and "manifesting". God I hate the "manifesting" world. lol. But thats a whole other thing. I was once forced in a class (seriously) to watch The Secret, w...

Re: Is life a illusion?
This is a classic misunderstanding. Stick your hand into a fire and you will find out that there is a big difference between an intellectual grasp of the concept of non-substantiality and the reality you experience. Anyway, Buddhism has never said that life IS an illusion (compared to what?), but r...

Re: Stagnant sanghas, teachers not teaching
Just sitting up there and doing it the same old way that is not working and just insisting that the students are flawed is not the way we get past the gray dharma centers. The teachers need to adapt. Teaching is not a collaborative enterprise. When I used to go to dharma centers, it would annoy me ...
