I apologize if it's already been posted, but which Sutra or Sutras mention Kishitigarbha, and or tell his story?
Thanks,

Re: Lojong without Guru Yoga
Read Pema Chodron's "Start where you are." She is a wonderful Lojong teacher. I think that not having a guru is better than a bad guru, and by bad guru, not only in the literal sense, but in our view of the guru. I think a real feeling and devotion to the practice are more important. Also,...

Pure land Monastery Florida?
Does anyone know of a Pureland Monastery or Center in Florida? We have a Vietnamese Monastery, but I think they are mostly practicing Zen.

Re: Breathing meditation in Greek Philokalia
There is a book called "The Way of The Pilgrim" that is completely focused on this prayer. It is a really good book by an unknown author and his search to "pray unceasingly." Shambhala publications put out a good edition.

Re: Pureland study group anyone?
Sounds like fun. Any preferences on the translation? I have a few different copies, maybe we could even compare and contrast. I think whatever you have is fine, the various translations follow the same theme, besides perhaps those reading different translations can bring a different perspective to ...

Re: Nightmares
I think the nembutsu could be clearing out all the garbage. I read an article recently that said Buddhism is "not for happiness." It said something like, if all your garbage isn't coming out, then it will never be removed and transformed. Just my opinion anyway. I was so happy when I start...

Pure land and Tibetan Buddhism
Does anyone know much about Pure Land Buddhism in Tibet? I found a book recently Called "Luminous Bliss," but haven't been able to read it. I also listened to a Dharma talk by a Tibetan teacher who said Pure Land is actually big in Tibet, but it's not very popular here for the same reasons...

Re: Is Buddhism just as irrational as other beliefs?
I just want to put in one opinion. If it's true, you don't have to believe in it. Like you don't have to believe that fire burns, or that water gets you wet, or start a campaign on the true belief of the heat of fire. That being said, I think belief allows us to filter out any other information that...

Re: Lojong as " stealing " ?
One of the first things my teacher told me about lojong and tonglen was to do it with threefold purity: no one giving, no one receiving, and no gift. So I guess it's to be done with a view of emptiness. One of the slogans is also "Regard all dharmas as dreams." So, it's all a passing memor...

Re: Chanting the name of a god?
I heard an Indian story about a man who wanted to learn to meditate, so he went to a famous teacher for instruction. The teacher asked, "what do you love?" The man said," I love my cows and bulls." So the teacher told him to go to a cave and recite, "I am a bull" (in sa...

Karmic Debt and Pure land?
I don't know if I can articulate this, but I will give it a shot. I'm just starting on pure land practice and am coming from mindfulness-awareness practice in Mahayana, but this question bugs me. I know in Hinayana that restraint is very important, but moving to Mahayana and Vajrayana, there is more...

Re: Interesting Recitation Method
The book seemed a little vague on exactly how to do it, but the author hinted that any way a person says Amitabhas' name is ok. He also mentioned just saying "Amitabha," or saying "Namo Amitabha Buddha" is ok. Silently thinking "Namo" on the inhale, then "Amitabha ...

Re: Interesting Recitation Method
One of my favorite methods is to silently say Amitabha's name; synchronizing it with the in-hale and ex-hale. I've found this practice in Theravada Buddhism with "Buddho." In Hinduism frequently and even in some ancient monastic christian practices of putting the name on the breath. I foun...

Hi, My name is Matt. I'm from Florida and have been a practicing Buddhist for about 4 years now and took refuge around 3 years ago. I did a few retreats and have an everyday practice, but it's hard for me to keep up with the local sangha. I had been aware of this forum for a long time and recently g...
