Re: Dangers of Meditation?

This is incredibly sad. I've been wondering for a while if this is a "sleeper issue" in Western societies. With all the benefits of meditation, when it comes to asking people to look into their minds - from varying perspectives on detachment from thought, concentration etc - there will ine...

Re: Ex SGI members and Itai Dosshin

Lol. I'm in the position of defending SGI... Land holdings? Yeah. Like they're the Catholic Church. Or even Trinity Church. I guess a few buildings does mean "land holdings", and if you have nothing that seems like a lot. Soka Gakkai is loaded. SGI-USA? I would not consider it a rich orga...

In one simple but profound statement

Some inspiration for the new SGI sub forum! This Ikeda quote, for me, encapsulates the cosmic power and ultimate answer for all that we strive in this tradition; a signpost for faith: "This world is like a dream one dreams in a brief nap. From the standpoint of eternity, there is hardly any dif...

Re: Pure Land and the Lotus Sutra

I don't have a problem with it Oceano. At the Tendai betsuin we did chant from the Lotus Sutra in the morning and from Pure Land in the evening. That's the norm and you can be a lay member, there's no necessity for tonsure. In my case I gave up Pure Land after I read in the Lotus Sutra that Amitabh...

Re: Pure Land and the Lotus Sutra

Tendai Buddhism is more along the lines of what you're proposing. I don't think this thread needs to take an antagonistic turn, but according to Nichiren, the practice of chanting the daimoku subsumes all other practices, including the Pure Land ones. Thank you, markatex. I think I was aware of tha...

Re: Difficult path --- Easy path

The Australian Buddhist, Marie Byles, said, towards the end of her life: "It is not easy to relax and let go, and plunge into the flood with only a simple phrase as your life-belt and the very-nature-of-things-as-they-are. It is not easy but it is a great relief when you do so." By "e...

Re: "Flirting" with SGI: any suggestions/guidance?

I would never fall for that kind of hokus pokus, people getting "bad karma" for leaving, LOL. That is literally funny to me. Yes maybe it's just a case that the group in my area is very benign. This is a rural hick area where most people are born again Christians. Maybe in a more cosmopol...

Thank you for having me!

Hello I'm new to the Dharma Wheel but a long, long term lingerer who has enjoyed the Board for a number of years. Time to come clear. I'm somewhat obsessed with Kamakura single-practice schools and have been known to dwell in both Shinran's Pure Land and also find great comfort in the tradition of t...

Pure Land and the Lotus Sutra

Hi I wasn't sure whether to post here or over on the Pure Land thread, Sometimes it's hard to tell. As it developed, East Asian Buddhism seemed like the most logical place for it, since it crosses sectarian lines but the sects all developed in that area. I have moved it to the more appropriate forum...
