Welcome Louie_88!

I would begin with the life of Shakyamuni Buddha and then read about great masters.

Well, begin with the lifestory of Shakyamuni Buddha. Then it depends on where your interests take you. You could continue with the stories of Ananda, Mahapajapati, Mahakashyapa, Anguilimala, Mahamaudgalyayana, Śāriputra and/or Subhuti. Then which ever tradition you feel drawn to, you could begin with great masters from those traditions: the Mahasiddhas of Indian Buddhism, esp. Tilopa, Naropa, Nagarjuna, etc. (these are written in various versions of the 88 Mahasiddhas), Padmasambhava, Yeshe Tsogyal, Milarepa, Sakya Pandita, and/or Tsongkhapa from Tibetan Buddhism, Dogen from Japanese Zen, Saicho and Kukai for the beginnings of Japanese Buddhism, Chinul from Korean Zen, Xun Yun and Sheng Yen from Chinese Buddhism/Chan, Thich Naht Hanh from Japanese Zen (the later 2-3 being contemporary Buddhism). Along the way you will encounter other great master's names. But you will gain much more knowledge and your interests will start to take shape.
