How to treat weak prana vata etc.?

Post by Inge »

Hi.
I recently saw an ayurvedic doctor who told me that my prana vata is weak, and that my blood carries toxins, as the function of elimination of toxins is not good. This was at a Maharishi Ayurvedic center, and he prescribed several Maharishi Ayurvedic products which are too expensive for me (over 350 usd/month), so I wonder if anybody knows of more affordable formulas for strengthening the prana vata and elimination of toxins?

You can increase Prana Vata by taking Calamus Root but if you live in the US, it is now only available for external use in the US (despite centuries of safe internal use in ayurvedic medicine).
For toxins, you need to start with taking Triphala ( a mix of three dried fruits) as a powder for six months as a starting point.
Both of these should be relatively inexpensive.

Pranayama with prana mudra (tip of the thumb touching the tip of the little and ring fingers gently), in particular, the seven main pranayamas of hatha yoga are good. If you need a teacher, you can follow Ramdev's vids on youtube. Swami Ramdev is an excellent and very qualified teacher.

Note: in this video Ramdev refers to the mudra as shakti mudra.

Go to your local India town and find an Ayur Vedic Doctor. Much cheaper than the Maharishi pyramid scheme. If they recommended Amrit Kalash most Indian corner stores sell Chyawanprash which is a far superior product for one tenth the cost. I worked in a Maharishi Ayurvedic clinic decades ago.

Thanks. I'll try Calamus Root. Do you know how much, when, and for how long it should be taken?

Thanks. There are no local India town here in Norway. I recently discovered the webshop indiaabundance.com, and they deliver express to Norway through DHL for only 8 USD, which is less than what you have to pay for regular local norwegian postage! I'll try ordering Chyawanprash from them.

Calamus root can either be taken directly as a powder "snuff" once a day in the morning, but it is quite harsh on the sense organs ( it is used so in ayurvedic medicine to stop seizures which are a major disorder of Prana Vata), or ( I recommend ) as essential oil, three drops maximum mixed with sesame oil in a small dropper bottle. put three drops in each nostril, then tilt the head backwards and "sniff" with each nostril to let the nostrils absorb it. even then, the first times can make you feel like you inhaled cayenne pepper but it goes away with time, or else use one or two drops only.

Inge, since you've received Transmission from Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, why not practice Yantra Yoga. It's not so easy to learn on one's own; however if you don't have access to a Gar or Ling, then learning it on one's own to start with is worth a shot (just proceed slowly and carefully). The following I'd say are indispensable:

http://shangshung.org/store/index.php?m ... cts_id=519" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://shangshung.org/store/index.php?m ... cts_id=521" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://shangshung.org/store/index.php?m ... cts_id=639" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(This fourth link here^ is to a restricted DVD; but the other three links are to unrestricted items)

Chyavanaprasam or Chyawanprash was recommended to get from here by Malcolm:

http://www.trihealthayurveda.com/lehyams.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Although they've been out of stock for months now.

I've ordered Himalaya brand, however the following review makes me want to try another brand like Vadik or some other:

Don't get Dabur though; it's inexpensive, yet uses artificial preservatives. It would probably be fine it weren't for that:

Thanks.
I try to practice Yantra Yoga on an irregular basis. I have only learnt - Tsigjong: Loosening the Joints, and Lungsang: Purifying the Prana.

The only chywanaprash available in stores here in Norway is this one: http://www.pukkaherbs.com/chywanaprash.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - I think it is of good quality, but also very expensive.

Amazon.com doesn't ship to Norway?

Hm doesn't seem too expensive, although it doesn't seem to say how much is in one bottle, and I wonder if £6.95 is more than $6.95...

Anyway, if you can afford it, the four Yantra Yoga items I posted links to above are all well worth it if you want to learn on your own, have a good rug or wool Yoga blanket, somewhere to practice, and sufficient time to do at least a good 90 minute session everyday.

Yantra Yoga could even be one's main practice by adding Nine Purification Breathings, Guru Yoga, Om E Ho Shuddhe..., Three Roots/Bodhicitta, and Dedication of Merit.

Don't know if you'd be comfortable with it from a "religious" perspective, or if you are only asking this in the context of ayurveda... but I found Kundalini yoga to be a really powerful practice in terms of cultivating energy, and I know they have Kriya's specifically just for elminination as well. I mention it specifically because it's fairly widely available.

I have also tried various forms of standing Qigong such as Yi Jin Jing:

http://ymaa.com/articles/muscle-tendon- ... ing-qigong" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The 'external' qigong has supposedly less potential, but is easier to feel. YMAA puts out a book covering both the internal and external classics.

Don't know if it matters or not, but the legend (though likely not the reality) is that Bodhiharma taught this sequence to monks to improve their vitality.
It's really simply and easy to learn, though minimal and not involving much movement. I have had such powerful effects from this practice in terms of energy that I had to stop because my sex drive was brimming over;) I mention the qigong because specifically the Nei Gong supposedly affects the Qihai/Dantian most greatly...which I assume corresponds to the root chakra.
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when afflicted by disease

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when sad

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when suffering occurs

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when you are scared
