More info about Avalokiteshvara

Post by Pumo »

Well, it seems Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig is one of the most important Bodhisattvas due to his great compassion, and is a very prominent figure in Mahayana Buddhism.

I would like to know, where I can find more info about him? I mean, like in the case of Gautama, can a historical document, Sutra or legend be found where I can get to know more about his life(s)?

I'm pretty interested in knowing how he lived as a monk in his time and on previous lifes.

There are a few legends and sutra available, including the one where the Buddhas bestow the prophecy of Buddhahood on Avalokiteshvara. There is the legend of how he was granted the 1000 arms and 11 heads.

But the best way to learn about Arya Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is to read the Prajna Paramita Hrdaya and chant Om Mani Padme Hum. His teaching and mantra. In addition, he has some Dharani that you can chant as well.

Doing these things will bring your mind into alignment with his, and through that, you will know what you need to about him.

See this fine book by Ju Mipham on the eight great bodhisattvas, one chapter on Avalokita:

This one is not a historical source, but it is the start of a thorough series of teachings about the practice of Avalokiteshvara:

Mipham's book above mentioned gives the sutra sources he compiled from.
