How would knowing your sexual preference help me understand you better? Knowing your sexual preferences would only be of any value to me if I wanted to have sex with you.

It also raises the question of putting people in "boxes". All gay people aren't the same just as all straight people aren't the same. So how would knowing this information mean you understand someone better?

Sexual preference and sexuality are not synonymous.

Sexuality is complex and spans a vast array of human experiences including family relationships, dating, sexual behavior, physical development, sensuality, sexualization, reproduction, gender, body image and more. It is a fundamental and natural part of being human, for people of all ages. Defining sexuality can be difficult….

There are differences between gender identity, gender expression, biological sex, and sexual orientation. This graphic is useful, but it's very deeply flawed because it's based on a gender binary model.

There are non gender binary approaches. This graphic is useful.

In terms of sexual identity, it's an even richer spectrum. This graphic is useful.

Of course none of these reflect transgender experience. This graphic is useful.
