Post by amanitamusc »

There has been much talk on the senseless loss of human life lately.

As tragic as recent events are, they are dwarfed by stuff that goes on everyday - even when limited to the human world. Things that are "closer to home" though are what gets media priority.
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when afflicted by disease

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when sad

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when suffering occurs

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when you are scared

I don't think all lives are equal from a Buddhist perspective. Murdering an arhat has a graver result than murdering an ordinary human. In the Vinaya, the consequence of killing a human is expulsion, while the consequence for killing an animal is only that you must confess.

This doesn't change the fact that all mother beings are precious. That you are so concerned for the lives of animals is evidence of your extensive bodhisattva compassion.

Were it your brother, friend, or son who got gunned down, you would not turn around and imagine the lives lost in Hiroshima or what have you to lessen your grief, nor should you weigh one being's suffering against another to make some kind of determination. As a Buddhist, you awaken bodhicitta for all.

This is a vale of tears, and opportunities to become numb (i.e. ignorant) of others' pain are rampant, but such comparisons only harden the heart.
