17. In the teachings the rituals are especially important.

It is said: "In the teachings the rituals are especially important."
[The Buddha] thought of monastic persons [when making] the distinction.
Saying mantrins and householders do not need to engage in the marks and rituals.
When the ten presences1 are complete [thoughts of] "that is enough",
"that is sufficient" are abandoned
And also [a proud attitude, thinking] "I will perform" is abandoned
Together with the attachment to a title that is attained.
Then the words of the Jina are taken as a witness
And the act of the four prayers2 is accomplished in the correct manner,
Without mistakes and leaving parts out.
[If] the [roles of] preceptor and Acarya are combined,
The added number [of people] is incomplete,
Or the preceptor performs [the ceremony] by a ritual that is too short or too long, etc.,
[Then] he is called a murderer of the teaching.

1. The Ten presences are the presences of: 1. teacher 2. Buddha 3. Dharma 4. Preceptor 5. Acarya 6. desire for full ordination 7. articles 8. authenticity 9. request 10. karma
2. Asking three times for the precepts to be given and the preceptor bestowing the precepts.

Jigten Sumgon Gongchig Commentary by Rigdzin Chokyi Dragpa The Lamp Dispelling the Darkness
"When one is not in accord with the true view
Meditation and conduct become delusion,
One will not attain the real result
One will be like a blind man who has no eyes."
