Monastic Ordination Resources
Re: Monastic Ordination Resources
17. In the teachings the rituals are especially important.
It is said: "In the teachings the rituals are especially important."
[The Buddha] thought of monastic persons [when making] the distinction.
Saying mantrins and householders do not need to engage in the marks and rituals.
When the ten presences1 are complete [thoughts of] "that is enough",
"that is sufficient" are abandoned
And also [a proud attitude, thinking] "I will perform" is abandoned
Together with the attachment to a title that is attained.
Then the words of the Jina are taken as a witness
And the act of the four prayers2 is accomplished in the correct manner,
Without mistakes and leaving parts out.
[If] the [roles of] preceptor and Acarya are combined,
The added number [of people] is incomplete,
Or the preceptor performs [the ceremony] by a ritual that is too short or too long, etc.,
[Then] he is called a murderer of the teaching.
1. The Ten presences are the presences of: 1. teacher 2. Buddha 3. Dharma 4. Preceptor 5. Acarya 6. desire for full ordination 7. articles 8. authenticity 9. request 10. karma
2. Asking three times for the precepts to be given and the preceptor bestowing the precepts.

Me too. Since it was posted 2013 the link is probably outdated now.Karma Tsewang wrote:I get a 403 Forbidden page when trying to go to this.coldwater wrote:Mahayana Monastery in North California- Tendai-Shugendo tradition

Sadly the temple burned down. Also Venerable Leary's last online posting in his blog was in 2015.Karma Tsewang wrote:I get a 403 Forbidden page when trying to go to this.coldwater wrote:Mahayana Monastery in North California- Tendai-Shugendo tradition

I had thought that Venerable Leary had passed away and I was unfortunately correct.

This is certainly quite a reminder of impermanence to be met with. Thank you, Kirt, for the information.kirtu wrote:Sadly the temple burned down. Yes, the monastery was ashes and now part of nature...and it appears the webmaster has taken the site down for some time. The internet remembers everything though!
If you are looking for its information you can check internet archives or Rev.Keisho Leary's personal blog for his teachings http://vkleary.blogspot.com/
As far as I know, there are no longer options for monastic (celibate/sober/relatively austere monk or nun) living situations in the US within the Tendai tradition. Being a priest is definitely possible as well as pursuing a monastic practice under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

Are there any resources in Portland, OR for ordination?

Ven.Pannavati and Ven.Pannadipa are building a non-sectarian Buddhist retreat center and monastic environment. They embrace Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions. Located in Hendersonville, NC- I just visited them as they were hosts to the recent Western Buddhist Monastic Gathering. Beautiful, quiet place with many opportunities for practice, study and service.
