Translations of Bhavanakrama

Post by Seishin »

Hello all,

I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions on a recommended translation of Bhavanakrama by kamalaśila?

Either Stages of Meditation with HH the Dalai Lama's commentary or this one. Both of these are the second Bhavanakrama (there are three). I haven't seen decent translations of the other two. Avoid Parmananda Sharma's translation.

Another fine resource is "Meditation and The Concept of Insight in Kamalaśīla’s Bhāvanākramas" by Martin T. Adam, a dissertation. English translations of all three texts along with very helpful analysis. A Google search will turn it up fast.

Also worth a read is his "Two Concepts of Meditation and Three Kinds of Wisdom in Kamalaśīla’s Bhāvanākramas: A Problem of Translation," also easily available.

Thanks Greg, I had forgotten about Adam's thesis. The translations in this one are fine.
