Form is Emptiness and Emptiness is Form ?

Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

Hello friend,

That's quite a question you've asked and the answer is very profound. The mind requires preparation to be able to completely understand such profundity - do you attend a Dharma Centre or have a regular Teacher? If not, I would like to encourage you, if you really want to know the meaning of this unmistakenly, to seek out a tradition and Teacher. Without knowing your background and how much you have studied it's impossible to give an answer that would be coherent.

What appears, is the primordial inseparable expression of "knowledge". Why "knowledge"? Because this knowledge is "naturally not grasping things" and "naturally not grasping things" is knowledge, primordial inseparable from what appears.

He regards whatever phenomena there that are connected with form, feeling, perception, fabrications, & consciousness, as inconstant, stressful, a disease, a cancer, an arrow, painful, an affliction, alien, a disintegration, an emptiness, not-self.
He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.'

Emptiness is viewed as a negation in the Pali Canon and was used to describe what was not Enlightenment, which is why numerous quotes as above lump Emptiness in with what is a cancer, disease impermanent..ect

The Buddha Nature Sutras also teach the same view that " Emptiness is Samsara" and Not Empty is Great Nirvana"
this lead Dolpopa to come to the conlusion of the Other-Emptiness(Shentong) view

All forms are empty of independent existence of means of it's own nature.

All empties are the empties of forms. There is no empty existing by itself.

The line is important to understand as part of the whole verse:
“Śāriputra, if virtuous men and virtuous women practice the extremely profound practice of Prajñāpāramitā, they should contemplate the Five Skandhas as empty of self-nature. Śāriputra, form is not different from emptiness, and emptiness is not different from form. Form is emptiness, and emptiness is form. Feelings, Perceptions, Volitions and Consciousnesses are also such as this.
Equanimity is the ground. Love is the moisture. Compassion is the seed. Bodhicitta is the result.

-Paraphrase of Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tsephel citing the Guhyasamaja Tantra

"All memories and thoughts are the union of emptiness and knowing, the Mind.
Without attachment, self-liberating, like a snake in a knot.
Through the qualities of meditating in that way,
Mental obscurations are purified and the dharmakaya is attained."
