Reflection and projection

Post by kalden yungdrung »

Tashi delek DW members / Dzogchenpas,

Projections can be reflected on for instance water.
But how can this be seen in the Dzogchen view?

- What are reflections and when used.
- What are projections and when used.

Projections are delusions. Reflections are clarity.

Tashi delek G,

Thanks for your reply.

- Do you mean maybe, that if the sun is projected on the water surface, the reflection is clearity?

Projections are dualistic. A subject projects an object and creates a dualistic vision, a delusion. Reflections, however, are expressions of clarity. I'm not sure how others might use these two words, but that's how I define them in terms of dzogchen.

Tashi delk G,

Agree projections can be of dualistic Nature, however they stem all from Nature.
Also we know they are self liberating into Nature.

But my attention is here based about the reflections which are clear etc.

- I guess we can experience or projections or reflections, because they cannot be experienced both at one time ?

With the way I am defining projections and reflections a person would not experience both at one time. If I see the moon in the night sky and experience a subject (me) seeing an object (the moon), then I am experiencing a projection, a delusion in terms of both subject and object. However, in a state of contemplation, that same moon that was previously being grasped by a perceiving subject is now just pure perception without a subject. Because there is no subject perceiving the moon and only pure perception, there is also no object, because objects depend on subjects for their existence. Therefore, all that remains is the pure perception of the moon, which, as I'm using the word, is a reflection of clarity (or one could say the play of emptiness) and not a projection.
