I'd heard this was the least unpleasant city in China...
When I was in Chengdu it was an excellent and very safe city (with the best food in China), that was some time ago though.

Perhaps this will help with our meditation on impermanence and death, where it is pointed out that none of us knows if we will be alive tomorrow. The issues, dramas, criticisms and reservations about life we all have can vanish in an instant.
A human being has his limits. And thus, in every conceivable way, with every possible means, he tries to make the teaching enter into his own limits. ChNN

I can't believe this ... this is tragic and sad ... my prayers go to his family and all the people who do have a connection with him!

This is shattering news.
I first met Akong Rinpoche when he and CTR set up Samye Ling and have seen him at intervals since.

May he and all beings find peace.

H.E. Kentin Tai Situpa has asked students and well-wishers of Akong Rinpoche to do the Milarepa Guru Yoga or at the very least to repeat the supplication to Jetsun Milarepa (Je Mila Shepa Dorje la solwandepso) many times during the 49-day period Rinpoche will spend in the bardo.

49-days of prayers will begin in Samye Ling tomorrow. There is still no news of where and when Rinpoche's funeral will take place.

where can we get these prayers?
If the thought of demons
Never rises in your mind,
You need not fear the demon hosts around you.
It is most important to tame your mind within....

In so far as the Ultimate, or the true nature of being is concerned,
there are neither buddhas or demons.
He who frees himself from fear and hope, evil and virtue,
will realize the insubstantial and groundless nature of confusion.
Samsara will then appear as the mahamudra itself….

"Je Mila Shay Pa Dorje La sol Wa Deb So"

That's the short Supplication.
I'd recommend people get the actual Guru Sadhana only if they have the empowerment, explanation, etc.

But the supplication can be repeated by anyone...

I just gave it to you, dude...as did Knotty Veneer, originally.

You want it written in Tibetan? Translated into English?

"Je Mila Shay Pa Dorje La sol wa Deb so."

("I supplicate the Laughing Vajra, Lord Mila")

If you want Tibetan, you gotta wait until I get to my Mac...or have time to find WiFi for my iPhone.

Thanks Cone. Yes, you will need the lung, empowerment and explanation for the Milarepa Guru Yoga to do that practice but anyone can repeat the supplication.

Rinpoche's brother, Lama Yeshe, who is abbot of Samye Ling has also said that people can also do their normal practice and dedicate it to the swift return and continuing activity of Akong Rinpoche.

Some advice from Ken Holmes Samye Ling director of studies:

"For those of you wanting to do some prayers related to Akong Rinpoche. Unlike ordinary people, he does not need our help in the bardo: he is buddha and if any help at all is needed then the Tai Situpa and the Gyalwang Karmapa will provide it, for sure.

The Tai Situpa has recommended we do the Milarepa Guru Yoga. Some of you may have had the transmission for the whole practice and can do it. Normally the Internet is not the place for meditation instruction but in this case I think it is appropriate to give the simple form:

Take Refuge & Bodhicitta first, in a way that speaks to you the most. Alternatively do the "Short Prayer to Vajradhara" (Dorje Chang Tungma).

Think that Akong Rinpoche's presence ... "feel" ... is vividly present before you in space but taking the form of the body of light of Milarepa.

Chant "Jé Mila Zhépa Dorjé la Solwandepso" from the heart as many times and as meaningfully as you can. You'll probably find the tune from a friend or on Youtube. If not, I'll upload it.

Milarepa/AR dissolves in light into you

Conclude by dedicating the merit to the good continuation of Akong Rinpoché's work, to his swift rebirth among us and to many lifetimes of meaningful connection with him."

I've also heard that it is traditional to do the Vajrasattva 100-syllable mantra an extra 111,111 times when a great master passes away. This is what the 3 year retreatants did when Kalu Rinpoche went into parinirvana, as told by Lama Karma Chötsö.

Perhaps if anyone is doing the Vajrasattva section of ngondro, or if he is their yidam, they could do this.
"The Sutras, Tantras, and Philosophical Scriptures are great in number. However life is short, and intelligence is limited, so it's hard to cover them completely. You may know a lot, but if you don't put it into practice, it's like dying of thirst on the shore of a great lake. Likewise, it happens that a common corpse is found in the bed of a great scholar." ~ Karma Chagme

Vajrasattva, for sure.
Also if people know the Thun Shi Lamai Naljor, that is a good practice to do when a great master of the Karma Kagyu lineage passes...
