Drikung Phowa: Jaktshukma

Phowa is a very special teaching in Tibetan Buddhism. It helps practitioners transfer their conscious in the process of dying. Once accomplished in this practice, one will not fall into the three lower realms, and will be reborn in the Amitabha's Pure Land.

About the 8th Century, Guru Rinpoche received this teaching directly from Lord Amitabha, and later transmitted this auspicious teaching in Tibet. There are many marvelous fascinating Phowa instructions in different Tantra texts of new and old lineages. The Drikung Phowa lineage, whose Tibetan name "Jaktshukma" means "the standing grass blade," is one of the most powerful and precious Phowa practices still taught today. To this date, this teaching is still well received by many Tibetans, particularly the Great Drikung Phowa event held every twelve years.

Guru Rinpoche once said that there are various Dharma practices for enlightenment taught by many masters; however the one leading to enlightenment without practice, only I have. Guru Rinpoche did not mean that we should not practice at all, he emphasized the fact that Phowa practice requires less time to practice, unlike other practices requiring a long time and lots of efforts. Phowa is a skillful means to lead sentient beings into enlightenment.

If one follows the steps of Phowa practice, it is possible to have successful results in seven days. Nowadays we live in this busy world and engage in many activities, and we may not have much time to practice Dharma, Phowa then becomes an important method that we can learn to achieve the goal. If succeeded in this practice, one can benefit oneself and assist others to be reborn in the Amitabha's Pure Land. Just by learning and practicing Phowa, one has created an auspicious condition to be easily reborn in the Amitabha's Pure Land by guided assistance of other accomplished practitioners during the time of death.
