Trungram Gyaltrul incarnation/lineage?

Post by Palzang Jangchub »

Does anyone know about Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche and his lineage? Can anyone vouch for him as a teacher? Despite being purported to be "one of the highest tulkus of the Karma Kagyu lineage" and "an emanation of Milarepa," I've never heard of him before. It seems the 3rd Trungram tulku had many illustrious students, including Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, some of the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa's own family, and [Karma?] Chagme Rinpoche.

The current (4th) Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche is said to have been recognized by the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, though he gave back his monastic vows before attending university. Apparently he was given the title of Ka Rabjampa (equivalent to Geshe), and holds not only the Acharya degree from Karma Shri Nalanda University in Rumtek, but also a PhD in Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies from Harvard. I have a copy of his thesis, entitled Gampopa, the Monk and the Yogi: His Life and Teachings, but must confess that I've yet to read it. It is said that he teaches in the Rimé style of his predecessors, and that he holds the Rechung Nyengyu lineage from Jetsun Mila's disciple Rechungpa.

Has anyone here ever attended his teachings? What would you say about his organization in the US, and their style? There's a Dharmakaya Meditation Group near my area, and I'd like to hear from some folks, if possible, before I attend.

Thank you, Malcolm. Just noticed that myself, as it was hidden away at the bottom of Khenchen Rinpoche's full bio in PDF.

Somewhere on Sharmar's side of the web there is posted a hierarchy of Karma Kagyu tulkus penned by HHK 16 in the 1960s. I'm sure the rankings have changed since then as some lamas success in the West have raised their stock considerably, etc. But for a Karma Kagyupa it might be interesting to Google.
1.The problem isn’t ‘ignorance’. The problem is the mind you have right now. (H.H. Karmapa XVII @NYC 2/4/18)
2. I support Mingyur R and HHDL in their positions against lama abuse.
3. Student: Lama, I thought I might die but then I realized that the 3 Jewels would protect me.
Lama: Even If you had died the 3 Jewels would still have protected you. (DW post by Fortyeightvows)
