I know that Sakya Pandita rejected Gampopa's teaching that there is a system of Sutra Mahamudra that allows the attaining of Buddhahood without the need for empowerments, but I have been wondering about what he thought about its validity just as a sutric system.
In other words my question is, according to Sakya Pandita (or by extention, the opinion of the Sakya School in general) if a person without any empowerments practiced under a teacher according to the instructions found in books like Clarifying the Natural State or Pointing Out the Dharmakaya, would they be able to attain ordinary Sutric Shamatha and Vipashyana, or would they only be able to attain Shamatha, or not even that?
