Who is 日月燈明仏 / "Sun Moon Bright"?

Postby Coëmgenu » Sat Dec 31, 2016 1:25 am

I recall that in a past age
immeasurable, innumerable kalpas ago
there was a buddha, most honored of men,
named Sun Moon Bright.
This world-honored one expounded the Law,
saving immeasurable living beings
and numberless millions of bodhisattvas,
causing them to enter the buddha wisdom.
(Saddharmapuṇḍarīkasūtra I)

Who is "Sun Moon Bright Buddha"/日月燈明仏 / rìyuèdēngmíngfó ? Is this Buddha's name Candrasūryapradīpa buddha in Sanskrit? Are those two names the same person?

Is our only attestation of this Buddha from the Lotus Sūtra? Is he mentioned in any other literature? In short, do we know anything more about him that what is mentioned in the Lotus Sūtra?
"My pure land is not destroyed,
yet the multitude sees it as consumed in fire,
with anxiety, fear, and other sufferings
filling it everywhere."
(Saddharmapuṇḍarīkasūtra XVI)

All these dharmāḥ are the status of dharma, the standing of dharma, the suchness of dharma; the dharma neither departs from things-as-they-are, nor differs from things-as-they-are; it is the truth, reality, without distortion.(SA 296, 因緣法)

Candrasūryapradīpa is mentioned in the Shorter Sukhavati Sutra.

Sun-Moon Light Buddha is one of the alternate names for Amitabha in the Larger Sukhavati Sutra. I haven't checked the exact characters used yet though. Might do it later.

Just checked the Larger Sutra and it's 超日月光佛.

In the Shorter Sutra the translation (according to BDK) for Candrasūryapradīpa is 日月燈佛.
月影の いたらぬ里は なけれども 眺むる人の 心にぞすむ
法然上人
