Dhamma Hospital Project @ Thabarwa Centre, Yangon , Myanmar

Sayadaw U Ottamasara, founder and Presiding Sayadaw of Thabarwa Centre, Thanlyin, Myanmar teaches Dhamma and Insight Meditation in a simple way that allows us to directly experience the nature of reality without any slightest attachment. Thabarwa Sayadaw repeatedly stresses on the importance of Right Understanding in our meditation and daily lives without which we will not be able to abandon our attachment.

Sayadaw encourages us to do good deeds, limitlessly and completely in order to have courage and to be free from fear in doing good deeds. He teaches by example in doing what is necessary to do - guided by Right Understanding and then Doing Only without attachment.

Sayadaw believes that sacca dhamma and insight meditation should be taught and made available to everyone without any restrictions and barriers, starting from practicing yogis (meditators) to the young, the olds, the sick and the terminally ills.

Since its establishment, without limiting the number of residents, Thabarwa takes on everyone, regardless of age, race, social status, health condition, physical and mental state and provides a peaceful sanctuary for the pensioners, the old, the needy, the disables, the infirm as well as chronically and terminally ill persons.

Regardless of their physical and mental conditions, Thabarwa provides them with basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter and medical care which includes hospitalization, for free so that they can fully concentrate on the pursuit and realization of Dhamma. Even on the event of death the Centre performs their last funeral rites and gives them a decent burial.

Due to the increasing number of elderly and infirm (sick) seeking refuge at the Centre and to enable us to cater to those who are in need, Thabarwa Sayadaw is now planning to build a Dhamma Hospital within its 80 acres Thanlyin premises for the following reasons:
* to provide a peaceful and safe haven for the elderly as increasing number of elderly people are interested in to practice insight meditation but they do not have anywhere to turn to especially when they are sick.
* to provide a tranquil and comfortable sanctuary where the elderly and infirm can practice insight meditation till the end of their life journey without worrying about the finances, the cost of medication and medical expenses.
* to provide a venue and an opportunity for volunteers, including the doctors and nurses, to practice insight meditation while looking after and taking care of the elderly and infirm.
* to establish a peaceful and tranquil sanctuary for everyone including the young, the old, the healthy, the sick, the locals, the foreigners, the volunteers to practice insight meditation and to do good deeds together.

We are very encouraged by Sayadaw's teaching and role modelling.
