Terry Pratchett

Post by Kim O'Hara »

Terry Pratchett, one of my (and the world's) favourite authors, is no longer with us.
His sometime collaborator and long-time friend Neil Gaiman had this to say:
I woke up and my email was all condolences from friends, and requests for statements from journalists, and I knew it had happened. I'd been warned.

Thirty years and a month ago, a beginning author met a young journalist in a Chinese Restaurant, and the two men became friends, and they wrote a book, and they managed to stay friends despite everything. Last night, the author died.

There was nobody like him. I was fortunate to have written a book with him, when we were younger, which taught me so much.

This was the last thing I wrote about Terry. I knew his death was coming and it made it no easier:

I'll miss you, Terry.

I'm not up to writing anything yet. Maybe one day.
That comes from Gaiman's blog at http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2015/03/t ... chett.html

He was one of my favorite authors also.
I became sad some time ago already when I read his statement about his affection with Alzheimer.
A great artist he was.

I had absolutely no interest in his work at all, but his brave and frank encounter with the condition that killed him was inspirational and admirable.

Until unable to communicate clearly he did an enormous amount to record the subjective experiences of an Alzheimers sufferer in a way that enabled a greater understanding. He was also instrumental in raising funds towards research into the condition.
He was dealt a bad hand and he played it with skill and aplomb.
“You don’t know it. You just know about it. That is not the same thing.”

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche to me.

He's one of those writers like Twain or Wilde where virtually everything he ever wrote is quotable.
