Here's one I purchased and have been carrying around with me this year. http://www.amazon.com/Essentials-Buddhi ... 1935413007

It's outstanding, and while this book serves in part as an illustration of the beauty and gravitas of Tien Tai and Tendai tradition, it's also a very enjoyable read, and has instructions and commentary on shi-kan practice from Ven. Chih-i that resonate very nicely today. Folks interested in meditation practice from almost any tradition would enjoy and benefit from this book. I carry it around as it is a manual that "speaks" to me and keeps me on track, day to day. I haven' found many travel companions like this one. I understand the great Chih-i wrote this to help his brother who was struggling with some life issues, so my sense is that he wrote this with some real compassion and a sense of upaya in his heart.

I also carry this one around: http://www.amazon.com/Walk-Like-Mountai ... 1896559174 It's a very nicely written and practical 21st century view of the ancient practice of walking meditation. Rev. Innen wrote in this book that he wanted to write a "magnum opus" about Tendai practice, but for now has written a very solid view of walking as meditation, from simply doing small exercises at home off the cushion, to the magnificence of Tendai Kaihogyo, and everything in between. Again, a very relevant book for anyone in practice from any tradition looking for a well written and illustrated guide to walking meditation.

I have a couple of recommendations, if I may?

The stereotype of the "souhei" of Late Classical and medieval pervasive and damaging, and it's also entirely inaccurate. So I'd recommend reading a couple of works by historian Mikael Adolphson.

The first deals directly with the "warrior monk" image, and comes to the conclusion that it was a politically inspired, anachronistic urban legend of sorts. Monasteries did indeed become militarized as Japan's middle ages progressed, but Adolphson points out that this was part of a trend in which society as a whole became increasingly militarized and dominated by warriors. It's called The Teeth and Claws of the Buddha: Monastic Warriors and Sohei in Japanese History

The second one is a history of Japanese monastic institutions and their political influence from the beginning of the Heian period to the end of the Kamakura period. It is refreshingly impartial, and also debunks the "warrior monk" stereotype at some length. This book also deals with the delicate web of politics and religion in Classical and Medieval Japan without being judgmental or preachy. It's called The Gates of Power Both books are put out by the University of Hawai'i Press.
