Here's something I came acoss in my rambling about the net looking for "Zen" related items.

It is an English translation of "The Zen Teachings Of Rinzai (the Lin-Chi-Lu).
Please read the preface...it explains what it is and how it came about.
It is in PDF format and will load on to your computer when you go to the site. Don't worry it"s NOT loading a virus or such to your site.
At least it didn't on mine.

For anyone who wants to read it, here is some info on Zen Master Bankei....and
Unborn!
or the Way of the Unborn as I guess Bankei would want it to be called.

Read it slowly, carefully, and think about it as you read.

Has anyone read Opening the Hand of Thought: Foundations of Zen Buddhist Practice by Kosho Uchiyama. Reading it now and I have enjoyed it.

I really need to get a copy of it. Over time I've seen it very consistently recommended. I certainly don't doubt its quality given what I know of Uchiyama Roshi.

I've only read 'The Unborn,' so it was nice to come across this.

'The crows go kaa-kaa, the sparrows, chuu-chuu

The Master addressed the assembly: "Just as always, every day when I come out to talk, toady too the crows go kaa-kaa, the sparrows, chuu-chuu, and I haven't anything different to say myself. All the same, when you really acknowledge this one word ['unborn'], you'll find everything is smoothely managed.

"The proof of this is that, while all of you here are turned toward me, intent only on hearing my sermon and wondering, 'What's Bankei going to say?' you aren't trying either to hear or not to hear the cawing of the crows and the chirping of the sparrows out in back. But, even so, once they start to chirp and caw, you recognize and distinguish the crow's kaa-kaa and the sparrow's chuu-chuu. And it's not only for crows and sparrows: everything here, when you perceive it with the Unborn, will be simultaneously distinguished, and you won't overlook even one thing in one hundred or one thousand. In the meanwhile, if a gong rings outside the temple, you know it's a gong, if a drum sounds, you know it's a drum. Your distinguishing everything you see and hear like this, without producing a single thought, is the marvelously illuminating dynamic function, the Buddha Mind that is unborn."
