Milarepa Guru Yoga

Post by KonchokZoepa »

do you need an empowerment or lung to practice it ?
If the thought of demons
Never rises in your mind,
You need not fear the demon hosts around you.
It is most important to tame your mind within....

In so far as the Ultimate, or the true nature of being is concerned,
there are neither buddhas or demons.
He who frees himself from fear and hope, evil and virtue,
will realize the insubstantial and groundless nature of confusion.
Samsara will then appear as the mahamudra itself….

Not sure if it varies in each tradition, Kagyu wise anyway. It is a guru yoga that brings up the winds, channels, and drops and mahamudra, which generally in the traditional approach of most kagyu schools you would need empowerments to be practicing these types of activities. There are references to the purity of the skandas and seeing the body elements as dakinis etc... a tsog at the end and all that jazz.

So if not a required to practice, unless one has had previous exposure to all the theory and terminology it is going to be hard to follow. Personally I received an empowerment before I was introduced to the practice but not sure if it is the across the board standard.

Hope that is a bit of useful information.

on the flipside there is a beautiful praise and supplication sections to Milarepa in the practice which are ok in my opinion to recite as daily prayers.
do you have the practice text? if your interested in those parts of the text let me know I can get a copy to you in some form.

The Guru Sadhana of Milarepa, written by Kongtrul, requires wang and lung, yes.

I assume that's the one you're talking about......

"Absolute Truth is not an object of analytical discourse or great discriminating wisdom,
It is realized through the blessing grace of the Guru and fortunate Karmic potential.
Like this, mistaken ideas of discriminating wisdom are clarified."
- (Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, from his summary of "The Ocean of Definitive Meaning")
