Bön Sutra

Post by kalden yungdrung »

Dear members,

There are according prof. Snellgroove in the gZi-brjid some Bon Sutras mentioned.

I will list them all here. Never saw a translated Bön Sutra. Maybe one could start translating one or more of these mentioned Sutras, soon or later.

Yes it is amazing that we as western Bönpos have never read a Bön Sutra!
For sure there is a certain reason for this.
We all have had Dzogchen teachings but never have had a Bon Sutra in our hands.

IN ADDITION.

Tashi delek,

We also know the Bönpo Prajnaparamita Sutras which are very similar to the Buddhist version.
I guess that some Buddhas tell similar Dharma somehow, if they explain Mind and mind.
I must say that Bön does not has so much published Sutras and this is finally needed, because via the Sutras the Dharma is mostly spread.
Yes in Bön there should be more Sutras translated and published.......

he principles exposed in the Bönpo Prajnaparamitas Sutras are much the same as those of the Buddhist version, except that the literature dedicated to these teachings is considerably much more developed in Bön.

This may sound paradoxical, in terms of history of literature, however this is exactly how things are from a literary point of view. If you have a look at the Bönpo Kanjur, you will be amazed at how many volumes are dedicated to Paramitas (about 70 volumes, varying from one edition to the other).

In fact, the Paramitas sutras are known as the 'Bum (lit. 100 000) which means this is a very large corpus of texts that is collectively known as the Myriads ('Bum). It would appear that the collection became so bulky that it was detached from the Sutra section, to form its own class of teachings.

Fundamentally, the instructions contained in these works are centered around 2 series of eightfold themes. You have thus a series of 8 Elements (khams-brgyad) which you find throughout this literature (starting with the Root-Sutra on Jamma) and a series of 8 themes which are specific to The Arising of the 9 Suns (Nyi-ma dgu-shar) which represent another approach to these teachings.

Among these themes are philosophical representations such as:

- Self-Awareness (rang- rig pa),
- Eternal Space (g.yung-drung dbyings),
- Wisdom (ye-shes), etc.

With all these instructions, the practitioner is guided through the 5 Paths (lam-lnga) and the 10 stages (sa-bcu) through the basic pattern known as giving up (spangs) passions and realizing (rtogs) the natural state

The root or essence of all these Prajnaparamita teachings is to unfold the quintessence of Reality (bon-nyid snying po) which correspond to the real expression of the natural state. In The Arising of the 9 Suns of Compassion (Thugs rje nyi ma dgu shar), it is said :

Thus at one time, the Revealer declared :

The principle of the Display of the Quintessence of Reality
Should not be looked for outwardly because it abides in oneself
It is like the sky which embraces everything
In the purity of its (abiding) mode (endowed with an) ocean-like depth
Its error-less teachings blaze with a perfect splendor

There is one work which summarizes nearly everything regarding the Bön Prajnaparamita Sutras. It is entitled The Ornament of the Gradual Path of Manifest Realization of the Prajnaparamita (Shes rab kyi bla na med par phyin pa mngon par rtogs pa lam gyi rim pa'i rgyan) and discusses in verse form the 8 Elements (khams-brgyad) which are central to this literary genre and practice.

I don't know if this exists in English translation, a French version has been started but never completed (maybe in 2009).

If there is only one text to read/study/receive regarding the Bön Prajnaparamita, it is certainly this one. It is not always very easy but it is clear enough to provide some easy understanding and since generally the Bönpo Geshe cursus spends so much time on the Paramitas, it should not be impossible to have a qualified Geshe discuss at length and with pertinence on this subject.

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when sad

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when suffering occurs

Have you asked your teachers to translate the Bön sutras? I know they have a lot on their plates but this would be a very meritorious project.

Tashi delek JD,

Thanks for sharing !

But it"s a drop in the ocean, if we see how many Sutras there are in the Bönpo Kanjur. :)
Regarding Dzogchen and Tantra there is a lot, but there are also others and some of them need realy Sutra first.

Tashi delek K,

Yes and i offered to pay the translation and printing of the Sangye Menla Sutra, some time ago.
Have to come back to that agreement one more time ..........

I guess that the Dzogchen and Tantra were more urgent than the Sutras.
