Honorific titles

Post by lotwell »

Does anybody know the corresponding equivalents of His Holiness, His Eminence, and other such terms in Tibetan and how they are used?

Thanks!

Warm regards,

Lowell

There are all sorts of honorifics in Tibetan but not literally equivalent to these English terms. They are appropriated from the Catholic Church, where they are used to refer to the Pope and Cardinals.

His Holiness = skyabs rje (kyabje), literally Lord of Refuge

His Eminence = skyabs mgon (kyabgon) literally Lord Protector
