Ngawang Tsultrim was born in 1973. In 1983, he went to Bhaktapur Primary School and studied there for 6 years. In 1990, he went to Sera Jey Monastery in South India and was ordained as a novice monk in the presence of Venerable Khenzur Jetsun Ngawang Legden.

In May 1995, he was fully ordained as a monk in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala. He obtained the Paramita Certificate in 1998 and in 2002, he finished the study of Madhyamika (Middle View). With great interest to study more, he then took up studies of Logic, Vinaya, Abhidharmakosha, and so on.
In the year 2004, he received many teachings, oral transmissions and empowerments from the holder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage, His Holiness Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. In March 2009, he received a certificate for the clearance of five volumes of teachings and the Honorable Title of Geshe from Sera Jey Monastery.

In April 2009, he went to Palden Gyumay Monastery in India to study the Secret Tantrayana for a year and received a Degree in Tantrayana.
Under the instruction of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, he went to Drikung Kagyu Rinchen Ling Monastery in Nepal in 2010. Upon his arrival, he took up the responsibility of teaching Logic and Science to the young lamas there.

During his stay in Rinchen Ling Monastery, he received many high tantric teachings and empowerments from His Eminence Nubpa Rinpoche. In 2010 and 2011, he received two very precious teachings, namely Jewel Ornament of Liberation and Gong Chik from Khenchen Konchong Gyaltsen Rinpoche.
