My desire is like a ripple
Always there, ever present
In the background of my thoughts
I used to think it was a wave
A storm
A tsunami
Surely this must be the case, I thought
Because every time I noticed it
I was swept away
But no, this is not so
Its not a tidal wave
But a constant thing
Subtle, in the background
Always waiting to spring into mind
To draw me away from presence
See, the huge waves, they are easy to deal with
Because they are obvious, you see them coming
They are huge, you can't miss them
Deal with them in a single cut
And they are gone
But this is different
Hard to see and notice
Desire arises in a million tiny ways
So when I give into temptation
Its not that I've been swept away by a wave
Instead I was slowly sinking for a long time
I just didn't notice
Then suddenly I notice it
But I am already underwater
Drowned
But its OK
Ill just go to the surface again
Into the clear air
Beneath an open sky
And sit in the sun
This Ripple of Desire
