Enlightened Masters

Post by Vidyaraja »

Have any of you met any enlightened masters personally? Not just someone who claims they are enlightened, is knowledgeable about Buddhism, or is generally a nice compassionate individual. I mean have any of you met anyone who exerted an aura, a force, a power, a charisma, a holiness, a superiority? Someone who through mere contact or in whose mere presence one feels different, a sense of calm, or the sense that one is in the presence of a superior being? Have any of you met anyone who has displayed a true siddhi? More broadly have you ever encountered an individual who has a supernatural or mystical quality or attainment?

If you haven't, that's fine, but an answer that I am not looking for "such people don't exist, this is scriptural mythology, this doesn't have to do with Buddhism, you wouldn't be able to tell unless you were enlightened as well, there are no such signs as these, etc." If that is what you believe, OK, but really I am just curious if anyone here can say they have met or encountered an individual who has such qualities or who possesses siddhis of some sort or even if you know someone who has claimed to have met such an individual.

Edit: Seems I accidentally posted two topics. This is due to my mouse being broken and double-clicking with a single click. Sorry about that.

Several Buddhist masters, and one Hindu, that I have met would meet your description, I think.

The previous Kalu and Karmapa tulkus would fit that description. However I can't vouch for their new incarnations since I have had no substantial contact with them.
1.The problem isn’t ‘ignorance’. The problem is the mind you have right now. (H.H. Karmapa XVII @NYC 2/4/18)
2. I support Mingyur R and HHDL in their positions against lama abuse.
3. Student: Lama, I thought I might die but then I realized that the 3 Jewels would protect me.
Lama: Even If you had died the 3 Jewels would still have protected you. (DW post by Fortyeightvows)

I'm thinking you'll get a lot of affirmative answers from folks, frankly.....

It's hard to say whether someone is "enlightened,' etc., as you outlined.

But being with my master, Kyabje Dorje Chang Bokar Rinpoche, was a profound experience for me, and for many others, I've heard.

"Absolute Truth is not an object of analytical discourse or great discriminating wisdom,
It is realized through the blessing grace of the Guru and fortunate Karmic potential.
Like this, mistaken ideas of discriminating wisdom are clarified."
- (Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche, from his summary of "The Ocean of Definitive Meaning")

I've met great masters, Buddhist and non-Buddhist, who seemed to have real attainment and siddhi. I've got friends who are hardcore skeptics, and I've talked to them enough to know any account of such things can be dismissed by those who wish to do so, so I'm not sure specifics are meaningful.

The only other thing I can say is that while I'm not certain I'm capable of judging enlightenment, true masters, from what I can tell, all seem to have a certain clarity and radiance in their eyes.

A couple quick stories:

1. HHKarmapa XVI was going to do a Vajra Crown ceremony in L.A. Everybody had taken their seats, and there were a number of crying children of various ages scattered around the hall. The very loud Tibetan horns announcing the approach of HHK started blaring, but the children could still be heard over the horns.

HHK enters, takes his seat, and is offered the Crown. He paused for a moment and then placed it on his head. The moment it touched his head every child in the audience stopped screaming simultaneously. And I do mean simultaneously. It wasn't like it took 30 seconds for the crying to wind down. It just stopped, for all dozen or so kids.

2. Kalu R. came to Santa Cruz to give a talk. The afternoon before the talk he went for a walk on the beach, and turned down the Aptos pier. There were about 50-60 people with him, varying from suits and ties, to hippies, to college students, and of course some monks.

A fisherman got a seagull tangled in his line. One of our guys, Yeshe, untangled the gull and presented it to Rinpoche. The gull was in mortal terror, flapping one wing frantically and trying to peck anybody and anything it could. The second wing was immobilized. Rinpoche was reciting "om mani padme hung" and then touched the bird. Instantly the bird stopped moving, then cocked it's head. Now gulls have eyes on both sides of their head and can see 360, so I can't say that he was looking at R. per se, but it seemed like it to me. In any case, whatever was going on between Rinpoche and the gull made the gull completely forget it's mortal terror.

After a moment or two Rinpoche withdrew his hand and motioned to let the gull go. The gull started moving again, but not frantically. It just wanted to let go, but it still hadn't moved it's wing. Yeshe took it to the side of the pier as if to throw it over the side, when somebody said, "Don't! It's got a broken wing!" Yeshe threw it anyway, and it did a glide down to the beach. I guess Yeshe's fingers were pinching the wing, but I don't know that.

That night Kalu R. gave the standard talk on "The Precious Human Rebirth". There was no mention of the incident with the gull, even though there were 50+ people there that would have vouched for it.
****************************************************
Those were two very public incidents. Lots of witnesses. I was there for both of them, so these are first hand accounts, not just rumors. Such people do exist, or at least they did exist in the recent past, it isn't just scriptural mythology. Whether there are such people in the future remains to be seen--and it is up to us.

Moderators, shouldn't this thread be merged with this one: http://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=13829
