Mantras for the Uninitiated

I realize that Vajrayana practice necessitates a guru, initiation, empowerment, etc. But for those who have not yet done so, what mantra practices if any are available for practice? I've heard people say the Green Tara mantra, Vajra Guru mantra, and Om Mani Padme Hum are mantras which anyone can practice. Is this true and are there any others which anyone can do, and if so what are they?

I think Amitabha's mantra might fall under that category as well.

Medicine Buddha, Heart Sutra mantra, and any mantra from Mahayana sutras.

Generally speaking, peaceful deities (not blissful or wrathful) require
no initiation. But of course, lung is desirable, from any lineage holder.

On the other hand, you could potentially practice any deity with lung, which implies permission.

The problem is, as will be readily seen currently in Buddhist cyber world, some take this to mean that ALL Empowerments are superfluous. And even invent their own.
