Eleven-Faced Avalokitesvara Dharani Benefits?

Post by Konchog1 »

I'm becoming fond of this Dharani:

Namo Ratna Trayāya Namaḥ Ārya Jñāna Sāgara Vairocana Vyūha Rājāya Tathāgatāya Arhate Samyak Sambuddhaya Namah Sarva Tathagatebyah Arhatebhyaḥ Samyaksaṃbuddhe Byaḥ Namaḥ Arya Avalokite Śvarāya Boddhisattvāya Mahāsattvāya Mahākāruṇikāya Tadyathā Oṃ Dhara Dhara Dhiri Dhiri Dhuru Dhuru Ite Vatte Cale Cale Pra Cale Pra Cale Kusume Kusume Vare Ili Mili Citijvala māpanāye Svāhā

But what are the benefits? Does anyone know? The Sutra that introduced the Dharani hasn't been translated. The Chinese name is 佛说十一面观世音神咒经 and the Tibetan is Spyan-ras-gzigs-dbang-phyug-shal bcu-gcig-pa.

According to wikipedia it purifies karma and creates merit. What are the other benefits?

Thank you.

Equanimity is the ground. Love is the moisture. Compassion is the seed. Bodhicitta is the result.

-Paraphrase of Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tsephel citing the Guhyasamaja Tantra

"All memories and thoughts are the union of emptiness and knowing, the Mind.
Without attachment, self-liberating, like a snake in a knot.
Through the qualities of meditating in that way,
Mental obscurations are purified and the dharmakaya is attained."

If the thought of demons
Never rises in your mind,
You need not fear the demon hosts around you.
It is most important to tame your mind within....

In so far as the Ultimate, or the true nature of being is concerned,
there are neither buddhas or demons.
He who frees himself from fear and hope, evil and virtue,
will realize the insubstantial and groundless nature of confusion.
Samsara will then appear as the mahamudra itself….

The benefits of reciting Chenrezig mantra are inconceivable. Reciting the long mantra one time, according to the texts, purifies the heavy negative karma of the four root downfalls of pratimoksha (individual liberation). This means it purifies the heavy negative karma of a fully ordained person who has broken a root vow (the morality of abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual intercourse, as well as telling a great lie). So, this very heavy negative karma is completely purified. It also purifies the very heavy negative karma of killing one’s father and mother, drawing blood from a Buddha, killing an arhant and causing disunity among the Sangha. If any of these heavy negative karmas are created, then without break (of taking another rebirth), immediately after we die we are reborn in the lowest hot hell, and we have to experience this heavy suffering for an inexhaustible amount of time.

By reciting this mantra one time, we also purify the negative karma of the ten nonvirtues (killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, slander, gossip, harsh speech, covetousness, ill will and heresy).

Reciting the long mantra seven times purifies 100 lifetimes of negative karma. Reciting the long mantra 21 times purifies 1,000 eons of negative karma. Reciting the long mantra 108 times (one mala) purifies 40,000 eons of negative karma.

This is just to give you a very rough idea of the benefits and the power of this mantra. Not only does it purify all this negative karma, but it also fulfills all our wishes for happiness, to achieve enlightenment, to be able to liberate numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and its causes, karma and delusion, and to bring each and every sentient being to the peerless happiness—full enlightenment. There is no greater success then this in our life. By the way, we achieve liberation from the oceans of samsaric sufferings; by the way we achieve all the happiness of future lives, and by the way we achieve all the happiness of this life, as well as all our needs.

Would still like to find out more though.

There are a few translations floating around, here's one I've seen:

I bow to the Three Jewels. I bow to the ocean of the Arya's exalted wisdom, the king of marvelous
manifestations of Vairochana, the one thus-gone, the foe destroyer, the perfectly complete Buddha.
I bow to all the ones thus-gone, the foe destroyers, the perfectly complete Buddhas. I bow to Arya
Avalokiteshvara, The Bodhisattva, the great being, the great compassionate one. It is thus: OM Will hold,
will hold, do hold, do hold, hold, hold. I request power; move, move! Thoroughly move, thoroughly move.
you hold a flower, an offering flower; method and wisdom, supreme guru; burned with mind, may it be
removed, arrange it!

We do this as part of Chenrezig sadhana, it took a bit to find a translation but they are around..this is just the one that I found that was the least wordy.
Meditate upon Bodhicitta when afflicted by disease

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when sad

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when suffering occurs

Meditate upon Bodhicitta when you are scared

This Dharani was/is chanted in Japan as well.

Thank you so very much! Is there a minimum requirement or a certain amount needed to be recited?

I love this song. I love Imee Ooi.

And here is Ani Choying Drolma version with Sanskrit lyrics, very beautiful. Even though the video is titled "Great Compassion Mantra" it is really Ekadasa Mukha Mantra.

I compared it to this version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GICB7Jo0xWI

I noticed that Imee Ooi pronounces "ca" as "cha", but Ani Choying Drolma pronounces "ca" as "tsa". Which is correct?
