Half an hour into it he mentions that Dudjom Lingpa never had a human teacher.

and that is hardly the only thing unusual about Dudjom Lingpa if you read his biography Crystal Mirror.smcj wrote:Half an hour into it he mentions that Dudjom Lingpa never had a human teacher.

This is of course completely false.smcj wrote:Half an hour into it he mentions that Dudjom Lingpa never had a human teacher.
Just look on TBRC, you can see that Dudjom Lingpa was a disciple of a very prominent 19th century Gelugpa master , 'jam dbyangs thub bstan nyi ma. http://www.tbrc.org/#!rid=P382" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;"

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
He doesn't get into Dzogchen in this talk though. It must be in the next video. Care to post a link to that?

Well, the comment on Youtube by the poster says it all:
Here's a new version of the same video - needed some editorial adjustments. The old link has been deleted. Just to be cleared - I only got permission to film Alan's initial presentation at this Dzogchen retreat.

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
Is he a legitimate dzogchen teacher?
Considering his background with certain gelug teachers, does he support Dalai Lamas view on the gyalpo issue?

I think he said in the video that Gyaltrul R. authorized him to teach Dzogchen, but I'm not going back through it to make sure.Inge wrote:Is he a legitimate dzogchen teacher?
In the video he calls HHDL his root guru. Plus as a current Nyingma practitioner that precludes him from being a D.S. practitioner. The two are mutually exclusive.Considering his background with certain gelug teachers, does he support Dalai Lamas view on the gyalpo issue?

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
He nailed dzogchen in the first five minutes.... "the ground, the path and the fruition occur simultaneously in an instant" ... "it's about the quality of mind you bring to it"
he's giving a good overview... a fragrance that permeates the entire room... and putting it in context.
I do not know who he is. I have never heard of him before. I do not have any interest in his credentials. He is very astute... I had a resonance 20 years ago, "the ground, the path and the fruition occur simultaneously in an instant" ... beginner's luck... a taste. Main point: something lingers, an aspiration to go further.... he is saying sooooo much!
I'm still listening as I write.... listen to what he says about popularizing, simplifying immensely rich traditions. The dharma speaks in many voices. His talk is clear and compassionate.
I am also seeing that ppl like Alan have the ability to synthesize multiple lineages, same yet unique. Just listen to what he says about how the western mind tries to have a "handle on it". He is quite brilliant. Just listen again.

He mentions that he has been studying Dzogchen for 24 years with his lama, and has never had the pointing out instructions, or direct introduction as it is called here.Lindama wrote:He nailed dzogchen in the first five minutes.... Wait, he says he has never had a pointing out instruction? Do you know at what time in the video he says so?smcj wrote:He mentions that he has been studying Dzogchen for 24 years with his lama, and has never had the pointing out instructions, or direct introduction as it is called here.Lindama wrote:He nailed dzogchen in the first five minutes.... Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
He said that about one teacher... what exactly does that mean? he said much more.
Do you mean to say that you didn't hear a word he said except judgement about his lineage? He gave a good overview of many complex issues.

Start the video at 19:00.monktastic wrote:Wait, he says he has never had a pointing out instruction? He does say that the approach of getting pointing out instructions right off the bat has value, as well as the 'decade of study and long retreat' approach. He isn't putting any approach down.
Watch the video. Back it up a little, maybe start at 17:00He said that about one teacher... what exactly does that mean? he said much more
His lama is Gyaltrul R., a lama I know and like very much. He is the lama I pray to with the prayer, "Bless me to keep me from being too much of an uptight Kagyu."

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
I watched the video.... no smoking gun there. There's over an hour of dharma, is it narrowed down to one minute?
what did he say that is false?so much bloodshed on these borders that are entirely imaginary. how to overcome
... radically empirical, wake up

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
He says he never received pointing out from Gyatrul R, not that he never received one. See his list of teachers and teachings received: http://www.alanwallace.org/Buddhist%20T ... chings.pdf. He's received Vima Nyingtik from Khenpo Jigphun, for example.smcj wrote: He mentions that he has been studying Dzogchen for 24 years with his lama, and has never had the pointing out instructions, or direct introduction as it is called here.

I find it very interesting that he says all his Dzogchen translations (four?) from the Dudjom Tersar will be published next year.

Re: Alan Wallace on Dzogchen
Of course he received it. Maybe not from his rootlama in a formal way, but certainly informally. I mean come on, he was his close disciple for many years, and was authorized to teach!
Also, he received the Guhyagarbhatantra and commentaries from Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. And from what I heard there's no way he would let you escape without recognizing your mind
