Re: General Question Regarding Vajrayana Etiquette and Samaya

Well. I am planning receiving these teachings. Great and rare teachings, great lama. But I am doing a session of retreat at home. I'm reciting Calling Lama from Afar by Dudjom Rinpoche. It strikes me that no text says the pre-requisite to realization, enlightenment is getting this set of teachings. ...

General Question Regarding Vajrayana Etiquette and Samaya

This is a general question. Suppose one has a vajra relationship with a teacher (even a group of teachers) and a karmic connection to a cycle of teachings that one has committed to the practice of. What that might look like is receiving empowerments, instructions and transmissions from a teacher or ...

Re: Meaning of different colored meditation shawls

I made a vow to not comment but only ask questions. This seems to be appropriate though. The shawl or robe has whatever meaning we give it. My root teacher gave me a zen. I wore it to a center in the same lineage, tradition. I had a student pull it off my arm for being inappropriate. So I put it up....

Re: Pagan Deity Propitiation by Dharma Siblings

When your dharma siblings go to a doctor or any other specialist, or hang out with a friend who isn't you, do you tell them, "But ... but ... but ... he's not the Buddha!"? :stirthepot:  Actually if you look at my OP: Q: I have dharma siblings engaged in occult activities. Re: Pagan Deity Propitiation by Dharma Siblings

We humans seem to be a lot more fascinated with criticizing the religious decisions of others than making our own real. This criticism is really just a form of elevating ourselves and diminishing others. As we know that this is directly contrary to the Mahayana teachings, shouldn't we be more conce...

Practicing In Location of Great Tragedy

A teacher has suggested the benefit of practicing in the location of great tragedies. Such as where people have been murdered or committed suicide. The context is irrelevant. Places of great grief, sadness, and tragedy came up and he said that this is precisely where to practice. Q: Does anyone have...

Re: Pagan Deity Propitiation by Dharma Siblings

The OP's question was about the impact on others close to those propitiating pagan deities, not whether it was right or wrong... However, if these people attract beings hostile to Dharma practice or in other ways interfere with it, then Dharmapala practice may be beneficial. Yes. That was the OP's ...

Re: Very sad news: Letter to Sogyal Rinpoche / Abuse allegations

I have no samaya with Sogyal Rinpoche. Perhaps some lineages of instruction I've received went through him, but it's not been said.

So for me I ask myself how to take this whole event as a personal teaching and instruction.

Thoughts? I don't particularly have an answer.

Re: Bodhicharyavatara Questions (4 of ?)

So am I. I have an interest in the Bodhicharyavatara for reasons that are irrelevant to this question. I was reading that Patrul Rinpoche would encourage his students (at least some of them) to read the Bodhicharyavatara 100 times after teaching on it. BCA-Q9: Is there a tradition of this "reading 1...

Re: Bodhicaryavatara Discussion

I would be interested in engaging in such a collective study and discussion of this text. I'm not sure if this has been done before, or if folks are interested but I thought it might be useful to start an ongoing thread for discussion different aspects of the Bodhicaryavatara, both from the perspect...

Re: Dharma Arts-- Calligraphy

If its Calligraphy I would definitely call it art. but if you don't feel comfortable about it so be it. What I said was: I am looking at this less as an 'art' and more as a practice. That is less about how I evaluate and regard calligraphy. Of course it is an art form. It is entirely about my perfo...

So I have been trained in Tibetan calligraphy, specifically u-chen. Where, why, and by whom is irrelevant to this question. I have seen it said that it is of merit to copy texts and so on. Are there any particular guidelines or recommendations for this? I had copied some texts and mantras when my la...

Re: Tantric Ritual Implements: History not Symbolism

Specifically speaking about phurbas/kīlas, Martin Boord wrote this book The Cult of the Deity Vajrakilaya . Chapter Two is titled Buddhist assimilation of the kīla . I've wanted to get Boord's book for years. I am told it is restricted to those who received the Jangter Phurba and another phurba pra...
