Re: Pure Land teachings from a Zen perspective

As many have pointed out in the past, when Zen monks silently meditate and perform various austerities, and when Pure Land grandmothers with no knowledge of sutras or meditation recite the Nianfo, they are really working toward the same goal, since Amida and Big Mind are just different ways of desc...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

Yes. The teacher is the most important thing. But looking at lineages can be worthwhile too, just less so. This happened to me with Shambhala. I joined because of Trungpa, took some classes, hung out at the center for a few years. I didn't find my teacher there, but it was a first step, and it expo...

Re: Thus

Ha, ain't that the truth -- "you make, you get"! Hiya Keith, I remember New Haven, took a beating on some real estate back there in the late 80s. ;) Nice to see there is some activity there now, best wishes! Two quick stories: When one of our teachers, ZM Dae Kwang, was a young monastic, he did his...

Re: “My Three Years on the Soto Zen Buddhist Association Board: a Brief Reflection”

James is a wonderful soul. I met him a couple times and gave a delightful talk at a Sangha day some years ago. He wrote in one of his books the he moved on from Kwan Um because he didn't like the kimch! Poor guy, he has no idea what he missed out on! The hand-wringing over somehow certifying t...

personally i think its weird for lay praticioners to wear robes. But thats just me. Even if i were a monk, i'd figure out a way to avoid that
I completely agree, and I have practiced with Kwan Um for many years. It's a minor annoyance, though. Babies and bathwater...

Re: Zen Forum International status

Very kind of you, DNS. Honestly, I don't see enough momentum on the forum for your efforts to bear fruit. I see some who think a new start would clear some of the fluff away... I doubt it. I had slowed way down on ZFI for my own reasons not related to the forum. Personally, I think we can a...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

I don't know what enlightenment is, don't know what an "enlightened person" looks like and don't spend any time thinking about it. Apparently you have thought about it and came to a rather firm conclusion: i do happen to think that determining who is enlightened and who is not is not possible and i...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

i do happen to think that determining who is enlightened and who is not is not possible and is a fools errand. This can only mean that you believe you lack the ability to make a determination, you don't know what enlightenment is, or you believe it's a fiction. Could be a combination of these possi...

Re: Zen Forum International status

Thanks for your hard work on this situation, ElG. Perhaps down the road, the current owners will have the energy and a healthy situation in which to rectify the problems or pass it on to someone interested in reviving ZFI. In the meantime, DW does seem better equipped to keep our little herd of Zen ...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

Oh Dear! I knew I'd put my foot in it sooner or later  It was something I intuitively felt at the time. Over 35 years ago. Not something that was demanded. And I did say I was young, naive & lucky. In retrospect, I'm glad I took that approach. And, yes, it was outside standard Buddhist pract...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

I will completely cop to being the sort of practitioner who sees the teacher in the "good friend" model, not an infallible person worthy of selfless devotion. I always found total Surrender to my teacher very useful. But, generally speaking, not without dangers. I guess I was young, naive & lucky. ...

Re: Looking ahead...(split from ZFI topic)

This is exactly the kind of questioning that should happen in public fora like this. I'm glad you brought it up. My understanding is that the sangha leader at Earth Sangha is a long-time Kwan Um practitioner. I don't know if she has authorization to teach. I can say that their practice and some of ...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

Keith, thank u for the good post. To continue to put out what might be unpopular opinions, i do happen to think that determining who is enlightened and who is not is not possible and is a fools errand. somehow, i think that the whole history of zen is based solely upon the thing u doubt and think i...

Re: Looking ahead...(split from ZFI topic)

Not to be nit-picking (okay, I am nit-picking), but I didn't find the Kwan Um connection with Earth Sangha. I did see a Chogye reference, but they are distant cousins, so to speak. The founder of Kwan Um was a Chogye monk, but the tradition is decidedly Western. It is a very interesting organizatio...

Heya Brother, tip of the hat to you!

My friend Marcel wrote that ZFI was out of business, so I came by here to see what happened.

All the best to you and yours!
Holy blast from the past!! (I was "Jok_Hae" over there)

Nice to "see" you again. :applause:

Excuse me for chiming in here, but to my mind this is essential advice that applies across traditions. I wouldn't be disappointed if these words were added to the top of the site page. ~ Meido :offtopic: Really? That's interesting. I would love to see you drag this topic over to the Zen forum for d...

Not sure if this is the right place for this request but here I go. I'm looking for references about enlightenment success rate references in any kind of buddhist doctrine or collective. For example I recall reading in some book by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (I think it was "Clarifying the natural state")...

There's a Mindful Living group in NoVA. You'll need to drive a bit if you are in Alexandria, as it's in Vienna. http://www.mpcf.org/calendar.html Don't feel like fighting traffic on 66? I don't blame you. Consider... Earth Sangha. Also meeting in the same yoga shop as the Tendai group and the Soto ...
