Re: Hyongak Sunim fed up with Korean Seon

This is old news. He still practices and teaches, in Germany if I remember correctly.

Re: Zazen and breathing

There is some basic instruction in the book for "belly breathing" (fukushiki kokyu), which is something necessary to practice zazen (it's not "Zen" breathing per se, just normal human breathing, but many people lose the habit of breathing this way). Is this universal in Zen? Do Soto practitioners u...

Re: A Zen story that stayed with me for decades

Thanks for the sources cited comments and additional stories folks. Does the modern practice still involve the process of checking with the teacher to make sure understanding is correct, or when the student finally breaks through her doubt in the process of wrestling mightily with the cognitive dis...

Re: A Zen story that stayed with me for decades

Guji's Finger was the first koan I was assigned to work with by my teacher. It's consider an "easy" one by most, but I struggled mightily with it. My favorite Zen story isn't a koan, but a story from " Dropping Ashes on the Buddha ", by ZM Seung Sahn: Once a student came to Zen Master Hyang Bong and...

Re: Looking ahead...(split from ZFI topic)

Hi jinglebell (what was your previous nik?) Yes, I agree. Although I was never on the E-Sangha staff, I remember a great deal of displeasure and censure of things like a modern Zen understanding of "monk", notions like post-mortem rebirth and permanent nirvana and the like. Truth be told, there is ...

Re: Soen Yu, breathing exercises taught by Zen Master Dae Bong

Nice. I'm curious about the origins of Seung Sahn's breathing exercises. Zen Master Seung Sahn's body was always giving him trouble, so this was something he came up with to help with that. It's not meant to be as heavy as chi kung or the like, although if you have a background in that, it is basic...

Unannounced maintenance window? Doesn't sound like they know what they are doing. They are "on the top of it", didn't you hear the man? ;) "On the top of" what, I wonder? The window?? Desperately clinging to it, as it swings in the wind? I just checked, and the site is still down. Man, you guys jus...

Re: New Zen Forum invitation

If I’m right, it’ll either end up being a TreeLeaf clone were members are expected to bow in deference to the every utterance from the Master in melodic sonance, or it’ll suffer the same fate as ZFI. If I’m wrong then who knows what’s possible. Mmmm...cynicism. Like a nice warm blanket that comfort...

Re: Seeking enlightenment (satori/bodhi)

As a good friend was always saying: Practice and see what happens. Whatever we think will happen, it isn't that. I am always littering the forums with this poem, but I love it for when this subject arises: As long as I don't aim, I won't miss. With the catalpa bow, I shoot an arrow Toward the open s...

Re: “My Three Years on the Soto Zen Buddhist Association Board: a Brief Reflection”

Thanks Matylda, that looks much like what I am hearing. Maybe some day a true master might emerge in the West that captures everyone attention. But to be honest, this is what’s been tried and tried, and maybe the humble path of tending to and building the temple is a greater good? Meh, I would bewa...

Re: How do I go deeper into Zen practice?

That's exactly what your teacher told you. Our job is to attain "nothing to hinder". The Heart Sutra says "no attainment, with nothing to attain". In one sense, that's literally true. Originally, there is no thing or event called "attainment". The teaching is don't attach to the idea of attainment....

Re: New to the idea, currently in a state of flux

Good day everyone, as a rebellious teen I spent most of my teenage life debating the merits of Christianity and ultimately becoming an atheist. Now in my life I'm a year shy of 30 and once again questioning my own beliefs, souls, eternity, heaven, some of these things are similar, some make no sens...

No Zennist me. But I wish you would post more often Keith. Thanks for the kind words, Simon. And for reminding me that I misspelled "and"! :tantrum: No Soto person me, so I didn't want to interfere too much.
