Re: Politics in dharma center - article

Unfortunately, it's requiring signing up to read it. Politics in the Dharma room is a constant discussion point for us at my place of practice. I am dead set against any mixing of politics and practice. Others feel differently. Politics aren't separate from practice in our day to day lives. But, it ...

Re: Online or in person Sangha

The place where I practice is close to Yale, so it's very common for people to practice with us, but have a teacher relationship elsewhere. It's good to practice with people, but it's also important to have an affinity with your teacher. It doesn't have to be an either or situation. I do lots of onl...

Re: Breath by James Nestor

Sounds interesting! The most important thing I learned when being taught how to sit was how to breath - in through the nose, expand the lower belly, out through the nose, relax the lower belly. If there is a Kindle version, I will drop it in. 🙏 Edit: too funny...kindle informs that I already purchas...

In my opinion, threads the begin with "In my opinion...", don't usually go well. As to the topic, fat shaming is awful. Just my opinion. _/|\_ My original post was a response to a thread in which someone asked the forum's opinion on the "self-care" movements and rhetoric that ha...

Re: Research call - looking for images of UK Zennies' practice spaces

...Very little in the way of Zen here. Mostly Tibetan style. Good luck with your research! If you could make other recommendations for places I might approach to help me find participants, would be grateful. Online Zen Forums are pretty much non-existent. If turns out that Zen isn't really good for...

Re: Research call - looking for images of UK Zennies' practice spaces

Hi Keith - yep, same old me. Been a while though! Not sure it was this forum, though... there was another, long since defunct, but I can't remember the name of it. Yes…once I read your bio, I connected the dots. Good to “see” you again! The old forum was ZFI. Very little in the way of Zen here. Mos...

Re: selflessness

When I awake each morning I notice different bodily states. As I lie reflecting on these states I find that I can alter these states by simply paying attention to them in a particular way. It is as though there realy is an "I" somewhere creating the change of state... There is something, ...

Re: “My mind isn’t like that”

I would just plant the seed of the knowledge of dukkha, and the cause of dukkha, and let it take it's course. It's an unassailable, unavoidable part of being a human being. I had a newcomer say he was "already there" and didn't need to sit because he had read some Alan Watts books. Eh, who...

Re: Logical refutations of a permanent self

A simple explanation of dependent origination is all that's needed, I would think.

But, I also wouldn't argue the point with anyone, as was previously mentioned. Better to spend the energy on other things.

Re: Dealing with a world of self-centeredness and malice

First of all, apologies for dominating the top of this forum. I thought I'd give you all a break for a few weeks, but this community has been such a great source of information so far that I wanted to come back with one more. And I have others, but I'm trying to contain myself. I've been studying (...

Re: Christian indoctrinated leaning toward Buddhism

Good afternoon, I'm new here from a Christian background and I'm looking to expand horizons and discuss Buddhism in a non-judgemental environment. What do you feel are the foundational principles of Buddhism? And how would you recommend a new student approach the material and teacher? The foundatio...

Re: Ignorance in a practical sense

One way to rid oneself of ignorance is to trace it back to the source. The practical method is to simply ask "where does the ignorance come from?" or "what is it that creates ignorance?" As Malcolm has noted in a different context, "it's a matter of diligence". Just kee...
