Re: "I didn't ask to be born."
I can see how someone who is intending to end their life might say "I didn't ask to be born" but that's just an attempt to rationalize the intention. The elegant solution around understanding the motivation suicide is found in this: that the pain of living outweighs all the other reactions...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)
Sun - "it’s a policy issue I support to make parents responsible for their genetic offspring regardless of marital status, in the form of paternity law and maternity law." Good luck, but as the old saw goes "Morality cannot be legislated." Therefore it is not a 'policy issue'. I...

Re: anti-"Hinayana" bias in Zen (and Mahayana in general)
I’d like to talk with serious Mahayana people who see the advantage of unifying with Theravada. Personally I don’t see any advantages. And this is in spite of the fact that the Thien tradition I’m in borrows quite a lot from Theravada.

Re: Questioning My Compatibility With Theravada Buddhism
I’m not sure Mahasi Sayadaw will be helpful in a Zen context, but that’s not to say it’s not worth knowing. Zazen is not either Samatha nor Vipassana, however maybe 1000 years ago Ch’an practice was considered to be both calm and insight, but both practiced together not separately. Just not in the m...

Re: Precious human Life
When I suggested men play a role in how these pregnancies start, in how families are formed and supported, and in men's responsibility towards their own offspring, here on DW, i was shouted down. Even though i agree with you on rights of unborn, i find this blindness to reality and inability to lis...

Re: anti-"Hinayana" bias in Zen (and Mahayana in general)
None of these men ever practiced Zen. Although sometimes Zen monks were accepted as students in their sanghas. Maybe that’s the confusion. But that in and of itself does not show even an interest in. ZEn or Zen practices.

Glad to hear this! I’m in the USA and we no longer have honey bees in our yard, in fact I haven’t seen any in years.

Another reason to like Mu Soeng’s translation: he sees these texts as authentic Indian Mahayana culture and not as something like Chinese fractured fairy tales

Emptiness (sunyata) is not the equivalent of “nothing” and to suffuse the mind with emptiness restricts, reduces, and removes craving. There really isn’t another way that I know of

I actually heard a teacher make disparaging remarks about Red Pine. It’s rather pathetic as I feel his translations are very approachable

Re: Which translation of the Diamond Sutra would you recommend?
Thank you all. I think choosing whichever one resonates with you and sticking with it would likely be the most beneficial. The imprint is the same. Good point. Mu Soeng Do you know where I could read a sample of his translation? Not exactly, he is a former Korean Zen monastic, of India national ori...

Re: The Big Discussion: Diversity, Inequality, Race, and everything that keeps us from Utopia
That was my attempt at a little humor. There's not a lot of places where Buddhist jokes might even have a chance of eliciting a chuckle. My bad. I was too uptight to get the joke. Well done. Ah, if it didn't get a laugh, it was a bad joke. Thanks, though. I'm here all week. LOL I'm just ...
