Re: Books on Shentong

The Third Karmapa, Ranjung Dorje's commentary on Nagarjuna's Dharmadhatustava is understood as a classic primer in the Shentong tradition, as far as I understand.

Re: Concise Guide to Conservatism

Spiritual traditions are traditional , not progressive. The Church of Satan would care to disagree. Spiritual traditions can be progressive. Ever heard of Engaged Buddhism, for example? Secularists can be incredibly conservative. Richard Dawkins / Jordan Peterson are both "secularists" in various w...

Re: Important announcement about Garchen Rinpoche

Good, Garchen Rinpoche is 83 and lessening the physical burden of constant travelling is a good idea. We are blessed to live in a world with easy access to live streams of his precious teachings. I hope he enjoys his "retirement". :buddha1:

By transcending the duality of meditation and meditator, external and internal realities, the meditating awareness dissolves itself into its luminous clarity. Transcending the intellect, it is without the duality of meditation and post-meditation. Such is the quintessence of mind Lol he accidentall...

An interesting theory about Star Trek's Federation that seems to me to be technically right—the best kind of right... https://youtu.be/P4KBPaS-1PU?t=1m34s This is similar to a theme in Iain M. Bank's wonderful Culture novels that feature a post-scarcity, anarchist utopia similar to the Federation. ...

Ok it's a guilty pleasure, but I was wanting to watch one. Do the community members have any recommendations? D or Voyager I would watch too. I will fight you on TNG being a guilty pleasure. Best is definitely S3E26 - S4E01 "The Best of Both Worlds Pt. 1 and 2", Followed by S4E02 "Family" as a refl...

What's their rationale behind that stupidity?
Its not stupid if you hate women having agency over their bodies and want to punish them for having sex (either in or outside marriage, it doesn't matter).

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)

Insane. Criminalizing abortion plus banning most birth control methods? Are you sure? That's insane. It’s insane, describes the leanings of most of the Right To Life movement in the US, and explains why the parameters of the entire debate are screwy. Its not actually about protecting the unborn, it...

Insane. Criminalizing abortion plus banning most birth control methods? Are you sure? That's insane. Welcome to the south. IUDs and the pill are explicitly no longer covered under health insurance in Ohio, which is taking it out of the hands of the people who need it most. IUDs are expensive . Don'...

Re: Abortion (as an example of problems caused by the common mindset in our society)

I was responding to the suggestion that the choice to abort is always due to an individuals wanting an easy life of pleasure Marcos. Many women choose abortion with an anguished mind set, because they see the alternative as worse for themselves and the child. I am not arguing their case. I am just ...

Re: What are the Tibetan "Fearful Dharma Protectors"?

The appearance of "evil" is largely a cultural perception. Many religious traditions use imagery that may appear violent and goulish to outsiders, but convey particular symbolic meanings. Look at the iconography of Christianity for example, it looks like its out of Hostel, but is used to convey idea...

Thanks, heart and Tlalok! Any suggestions on where and from whom I could get this empowerment? Would they ask me to complete prerequisites beforehand? Grigoris is of course correct, you're best connecting to an established lineage for practicing Chod (or any tantric practice). Garchen Rinpoche is actually going to be teaching on Chod in Seattle this weekend, and will also be imparting the Chod empowerment. Its all going to be livestreamed, so I wo...

HH Phakchok Rinpoche requested that this introductory book by Khenpo Gyaltsen of Ka-nying Shedrub Ling monastery be translated into English. It covers a lot of the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhist practices, including Shamatha meditation, mantra recitation, how to hold a mala, shrine set up and more...
