Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

An interesting if not very deep analysis on the Karmapas' meeting: http://www.asianage.com/opinion/oped/181018/ignoring-top-tibetan-lamas-puts-india-on-wrong-side-of-history.html Not sure where the writer gets his info from but claims the meeting was at the behest of Thaye Dorje. The article portra...

Someone hit me over the head with a vase then told me I’d go to hell if I didn’t follow his instructions

Serious answer: I came across the vajrayana due to the kindness of the guru, and remain practising it due to the kindness of the guru
:D ... made me laugh ... thanks.

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

If the 2 Karmapas can agree on the next Shamarpa, that will be a real cause for rejoicing. I think this Kagyu generation’s lamas can easily do a better job than the last generation did. I think if nothing else comes out of this, OTD will recognize TTD's son as Shamarpa (if of course TTD wishes that...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I don't think that will be an issue. Either they will fudge it and one could have a Karmapa emeritus kinda deal (like Pope emeritus Benedict) or even just because such a resignation is in the long term interest of the lineage - which surely is the intent of their teachers too. For sure, one thing t...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Also to consider is that having been recognised by their respective teachers - is it even possible for either to say now that they are not the Karmapa without breaking their commitments to their teachers?????? I don't think that will be an issue. Either they will fudge it and one could have a Karma...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Honestly if this is about who is to be CEO Karma Kagyu Inc. then I can imagine each begging the other to take the job! Apart from that the samaya and commitments between each and their students has been established and there is little to be done about that. Speaking for myself it would make no diffe...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

Wouldn't that knock the whole tulku thing on the head? If being the Karmapa is just a role or post - like being CEO of Karma Kagyu Inc. I was just wildly speculating. But you know, to my mind, getting rid of the whole Tulku thing would be no bad thing. And to answer Simon, interesting question abou...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

If the real problem is who gets to be Karmapa, then perhaps a "thinking- out-of-the-box" solution may be to retire the institution itself - just as the Dalai Lama has considered ending his role. Who knows? Another interesting alternative would be to follow the approach of the Sakhya Trizin position...

Re: Joint Statement of the Two Karmapas

I think that, despite the paucity of information about this meeting, there are a couple of interesting points that I haven’t seen raised anywhere. The first is that the meeting lasted over several days – unlike Ogyen Trinley’s meeting with Shamarpa in 2007 which only lasted an hour or two. Clearly ...

Re: Khaywang ?

Never seen that one before, but probably means Lord/King of Study, i.e., the intellectual side of Buddhism as opposed to drub, practical accomplishment. This is only an "educated guess" since you do not include the actual Tibetan spelling. Good luck & best wishes. Thanks that sounds probable - I ha...

Khaywang ?

Can anyone alleviate my ignorance by explaining what the term 'khaywang' means when prefixed to a lama's name?

Thanks.

If you read Tibetan history you'll find it wasn't particularly peaceful (to say the least).

Re: Lama Jampa Thaye

I am nearing the completion of my second foundational practice, Vajrasattva Purification. I need to receive the lung and instructions for Mandala Offerings and have chosen to receive these from Lama Jampa Thaye (who I understand carries the transmission of the Karma Kagyu). My preliminary investiga...

Just because it's on the other side of the hill doesn't mean that the grass isn't greener.

Re: Lama Jampa Thaye

Aye. What he apparently does not endorse (I hear from a long standing student of his) is collecting wangs from a variety of teachers across different schools. And seeing the muddle and lack of focus that results from that practice it's hard to say he is wrong. Not a fan of the Rime movement? I know...

Re: Lama Jampa Thaye

Without wishing to speak for Lama Jampa himself I would say the following. He is an extremely open, positive and helpful person, someone who walks the walk of dharma if you like. But when it comes to teaching dharma he is quite strict about the things you mention. He works within the lineage of his...

Thanks, I was not intending to criticize just lose a question. Sorry for any offence. As has been said most of not all reports of this Lama are positive. However the only query i have and it is really not important as i don't study with him is the fact that he does not encourage you to go to other ...

Re: Independent investigation confirms “physical, sexual, emotional abuse” by Sogyal Rinpoche

In fact failure to take moral responsibility for oneself (and indirectly those around you) must be to abandon dharma. If your lama behaves unusually then what is to stop anyone saying ' no I won't take photos of my genitals and why did you just ask me to do that anyway?' So this is the victims faul...
