Re: Thoughts in Samatha Meditation

Shanyin, you've been given good advice already. I would only maybe add the reminder that practice is the key. You have to repeat many times, consistently, the practise in order for your concentration to develop. So everytime you notice you have drifted away, move the focus back to the breath and tr...

Re: Thoughts in Samatha Meditation

Or the other side of that coin is that when I feel like I am succesfully in the present moment I feel the need to stop meditating.

Re: Thoughts in Samatha Meditation

I feel like as soon as my mind is focused on the belly in the present moment, my mind wants to be distracted. It wants to follow a thought then I get uncomfortable with my meditation because I'm not sure what to do ...

Thoughts in Samatha Meditation

Can someone give Samatha (mindfulness of breathing) instructions? And also, how to deal with thoughts included. For example, I used to really like dealing with thoughts in meditation. I would be able to notice space between my thoughts (time) and I would acknowledge when my mind follows a line of th...

Re: Can schizophrenics make progress to enlightenment through meditation?

I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and I noticed that I am more interested in sitting on my couch smoking than I am trying to have a disciplined meditation routine. Everyone is a different person, everyone has a different brain, everyone's conditioning is different etc. I think one reason I wa...

Re: Enlightenment

Sorry for not posting and answering the questions. I think that Theravada may be a more fitting school for me, because I like focusing my life around the 4 noble truths if that makes sense and I don't think about emptiness alot outside of my psychology or actions and I don't feel I have much compass...

Re: Enlightenment

Is the question, "what makes Mahayana Buddhism Mahayana ... how is it different from Theravada?" There are a few points of distinction. . . . Yes I think that that was the question vs Theravada. My mental state is a mess right now and I feel I have fallen off the eight fold path. I am trying to be ...

Re: Zazen

Thanks for the great answers. I think I should find a Sangha or meditation teacher. I think I was someone who you could say was following the eightfold path, but I have fallen far from the path to understanding the Four Noble Truths and living skillfully and mindfully of the Buddha's main teaching.

Re: Reiki

I have paid for Reiki healings including distance healings. Eventually the reiki healer made it clear that he can't do anything to help me. He used to say he can't help me but I have to do the work, and asked me to write in a journal. Has anyone else had that experience with the diary portion? I fou...

Re: Accuracy of internet koans

You guys have been awsome! Thanks for the great answers! I'm not sure why I am asking. Of course, I think it would be fun to go to a zen centre and try koans. I think just doing anapanasati and focusing on my belly would be great for me. I enjoy it. As far as being disturbed I think I just need some...

I'd like to know what it is. I want to do this koan because I want something to think about especially during meditation.
This looks like a common version: 両掌相打って音声あり、隻手に何の音声かある。
I don't speak that language could you translate?

Re: Accuracy of internet koans

You posted a video of the Simpsons. I am trying to find the true form of that koan, there are different ones on the internet. Do you believe that the one in the book you mentioned is the right one?

Re: One hand clapping

Are you saying that the entire koan is, "What is the sound of one hand?" Or are you saying it's "what is the sound of one hand clapping?".?
