Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

That's incredible. I didn't know how much Nichiren had physically suffered. I honestly thought that some of the stuff about being beaten with staves etc wasn't completely literal

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

r/SGIwhistleblowers is a cesspool. I used to read a lot of their stuff, thinking I was getting the inside story. And for a while, in a way, it seemed I was. I wouldn't know a lot of what I do about the Gakkai if I hadn't had spent time there. But what a lot of awful stuff to wade through. After a wh...

Re: How did your life improve after converting to Nichiren Buddhism?

I'd also like to add, that it will continue to change, as a result of how all of us, of every expression of sexuality, live our lives. I used to be bitter and angry about the abuse I suffered growing up. It wasn't just over my sexuality, but a large part was. It warped and damaged me for a long time...

Re: How did your life improve after converting to Nichiren Buddhism?

I think what you have said about your experience is incredibly brave and courageous. I'm almost 40 now, and in my life time understanding of sexuality and gender amongst ordinary people in the West (certainly where I am in the UK) has changed drastically in no small part to the bravery of other LGBT...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

I had no idea that his name means "great builder". I'm reminded of Soviet-era dictators who also changed their names. Q, I'm interested in what you say about the cult of personality (because let's face it, that's exactly what it is) being a political decision to maintain factional unity. Obviously, ...

What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?

(Or the Gakkai tells people he has died?) I'm an SGI member, and I've been thinking about this question a lot recently. Here in the UK, the 'Mentor & Disciple' slant is being emphasised more and more and, reading between the lines, some members are quietly wondering is that's because SG in Japan are...

Not so helpful really.

I'd recommend The Buddha In Daily Life by Richard Causton

Re: Reading more widely

Far enough. Academic study is something I enjoyed in the past, and I want to put the Dharma front and centre in my life so I can be confident in it. I'm not looking to leave the SGI or become an 'academic Buddhist' or something but I want to satisfy my curiosity and intellect, and also feel more abl...

Re: Bodhisattvas of the Earth

I have to confess I've always found this difficult to understand. Particularly the idea of voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma. How does this fit in with the law of cause and effect and the results of previous lifetimes? I’m not sure what you mean by this, exactly. Can you elaborate? Sure. I...

Reading more widely

Whenever I come to this forum I am more and more impressed by how ignorant I am of the wider Buddhist Sangha and how Nichiren's Buddhism fits in with with Buddhism generally. If I want to read outside of the SGI, do people have some suggestions for books? I'm not interested in sectarian bunfights, b...

Re: Opinions on this BBC documentary?

I remember this when it was first aired in the 90s, long before I became a member. The fact he makes no effort even to pronounce the name of the organisation correctly ("Sukka Gakkai" - really?) reveals as much as you need to know in the first minute.

Re: Question about homosexuality & life's experience...

I'm gay (and man did I have to wade through some awful nasty stuff to get to feeling comfortable in my own skin). I wanted to ask about something I've always found a bit disturbing in the Lotus Sutra - what does it mean when it talks about the 'five types of unmanly men' in the Peaceful Practices se...

Re: Why doesn’t Ikeda inscribe his own gohonzon?

I feel this too. When Mr Ikeda dies (or when SGI announce that he has died) could be a massive turning point in the history and potential future of SGI and the Gakkai in Japan, potentially leading to a split. In my more cynical moments I worry that there will be a move to basically beatify Ikeda as ...

Bodhisattvas of the Earth

Hi everyone, I'd like to start a discussion on what different understandings people have about what the Sutra means as Bodhisattvas of the Earth. In the Gakkai, the general view is that all the members of the organisation (and, I assume - although of course being SGI it's not ever stated - that prac...
