Re: Mahamudra or Dzogchen without tantric empowerment?

The Path of Mahamudra can be approached in myriad ways. There are traditions that dispense with Deity practice, but which rely on specific instructions, Pointing Out Instructions , Introductions, etc. There are traditions which utilize the Two Stages of Deity Yoga, as well. Tsongkhapafan's comments...

Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

The Visuddhimagga should not, under any circumstance, be regarded as the standard for defining these things In Dzogchen teachings. Dzogchen is squarely within the Sarvastivada/Sautrantika Abdhidharmakośa tradition. Therefore, it's definitions are the ones salient to Dzogchen practice and concepts. ...

Thank you for the thorough response. Any contending word to that of Alan Wallace's stance that the Vissudhimagga should be the standard? :jedi: The Visuddhimagga should not, under any circumstance, be regarded as the standard for defining these things In Dzogchen teachings. Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

Thanks Krodha,

Regardless of how deep one is able to abide in Jhana absorption (24 hrs still in first jhana. 2 weeks without breath in fourth as the Vissu examples). As long as the 5 hindrances are gone, that state is sufficient for Dzogchen practice?

What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

In other words, Is the Vissudhimagga standard for attaining Jhana and Shamatha necessary for the attention to one-pointedly focus on the Rigpa? Or Kamalashila's or other Sutta style Jhanas? Where on the sliding bar standard of light to deep Jhanic abosrption is sufficient to begin being exposed to R...

Re: How to become enlightened via Tibetan Buddhism?

A question about the bodhicitta. 1) Can the vow be done alone? 2) Or does it need to be in a ceremony setting with a group or near a Llama? And if thats the case, why the dogma of the ritual and ceremony. Buddha never did that. 3)Also, how do we know that we haven't taken the vow in a prior lifetime?

Re: How to become enlightened via Tibetan Buddhism?

As a side note, Im grateful for all the recommended literature but I do not intend on just studying dharma for months while I could be implementing and practicing dharma as I search and vet out teachers. I found this outline that basically includes everything I was looking for. It outlines the found...

Re: How to become enlightened via Tibetan Buddhism?

Thank you for all the responses, Im surprised it took me until now to look up lamrims. As far as a lamrim that best transitions into dzogchen practice - which lamrim(s) should I study? Are they all for the most part the same when discussing the three scopes, and just different with views of emptines...

Re: How to become enlightened via Tibetan Buddhism?

If you want a proper answer, you should invest the time to read a book that explains it properly - you will not regret that investment of time, it will make subsequent teachings you receive a lot easier to place in context and understand. Thanks for the advice. Any 1 book that you know of can lay i...

How to become enlightened via Tibetan Buddhism?

So, I've been practicing Samatha meditation now for about a year in the Theravada sense, and I wish to develop Bodhicitta and walk the path within Tibetan Buddhism because it just speaks to me. So... Theravada is pretty laid out on the process, steps, and techniques along the path while I can't seem...
