Re: Can Buddhism be Dangerous?

I've read the original message over and over again, and if I get things right, the whole idea is to ask how dangerous can Buddhism be since it's not "as serious" as other religions (I don't think that, I think it's his point) because you don't have rules enforced with an iron fist like in Islam or l...

Re: Jobs that serve alcohol?

I have a question: if you work in delivery, for one of these "food delivery" services, the ones that offer to buy a meal for the client in a restaurant and bring it to them, and that your client orders alcohol, is it bad to do so? You're not involved in the choice, just in the delivery, but you're s...

Re: Backyard Gardening

I built a shed in my garden a couple years ago, and in order to prevent the wood from rotting upon contact with the soil, I painted it and then laid it in a "pool" of concrete (dug a bucket-shaped hole, put a brick half at the center so that the "foot" of the beam doesn't rest on earth, poured concr...

Re: Unethical behavior in dreams

And what about less radical unethical behavior? Of course, killing or raping someone in a dream is terrible, especially if you don't regret it later on, but what happens if, for example, you made someone sad or insulted someone in your dream?

Re: 5 precepts

You guys make me feel better.... I've been trying to uphold these precepts for a while now, and regularly failing; I was, thus, starting to think that I'm maybe too weak, or not cut for upholding Buddhist ideals, but it seems that it's a normal, human thing. I now feel much better and somehow empowe...

Re: Hello from Russia

Don't get me wrong, Athens is worth a three day visit before you make your way towards one of the up to 6,000 islands, or some amazing nearby mainland locations (like Delphi, for example). The ancient ruins are quite astounding. The brand new Acropolis museum is ranked among the best in the world a...

Re: Hello from Russia

Athens does not have much of a historical center. Apart from the area surrounding the Acropolis, the rest of Athens is a dirty and chaotic maelstrom of concrete and cars. Athens had faded into insignificance and was little more than a village, before the influx of refugees from Asia Minor turned it...

Re: Listening to music while doing something else: good idea?

It's sure that the ideal solution would be to spend less time working or doing other stressful things, but sometimes you don't really have a choice, unless you want to have to choose between rent and food. I'm not in this situation, but I used to be, and in such a case, resting is close to a death s...

Re: Hello from Russia

Doesn't look like it has much a historical center. I imagine it would be preferable to be down south at this time of the year though. Oh, the weather doesn't change much when compared to Moscow, you really have to go to Siberia or far up north (Saint Petersburg and further) to really get something ...

Re: Hello from Russia

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I move a lot around Russia (it's fun to organise!) but I've been spending the last couple months in Saratov, on the Volga, in the south of the country.

Hello from Russia

Hello everyone! I am Olivier, originally from Belgium, although I live in Russia now. I'm 43, and have found myself more and more attracted to Buddhism these days, because of the harmony and inner peace I could witness among Buddhists though my travels in India, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Japan. I...
