Re: Thank you all

Since day 1 in NSA back in the late 80's, I've known quite a few openly (and not openly) gay folks in the organization, and it remains the case today. I've never heard anyone say anything about chanting to become straight or conform to some gender appearance/role- concur with Q on this, likely some...

Re: Thank you all

Does my heart good to see you taking pride in your practice for practice sake. it's not about getting things but evolving to the point where things come on their own, make you pleasantly surprised and one realizes the true benefit of trust in the ongoing efforts of practice faith and study. just a ...

Thank you all

Hey everyone, I just wanna thank you all wholeheartedly for supporting me through this forum even if you didn't know you were! Since I found this forum, I've taken control of my spiritual practice even though I had to grapple with a lot of hard decisions and concepts. I am chanting morning and eveni...

If y'all hit up the "Chanting Growers" group maybe some of those guys could be mobilized for your causes.

Will look it up! Thanks.

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

So recruit some folks in your district and go as a group- no need to wait for leaders to do or say anything. Don't need to get a bus to find suffering, theres plenty just outside your door no matter where you live. Personally I'm not into marches or sign carrying, my place is out in front of the pa...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

Who says SGI members should not unite with others as our respective conscience suggests? I volunteer at nearby a Catholic parish church. At first they were curious, I told them I am Buddhist and that was it. Since we're busy helping the folks in the parish, points of doctrine simply don't arise- in...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

While I wouldn't go so far as to say certain *religions* would be banned or that *buddhadharma* specifically is the last best hope, I actually have considered writing such a statement to officials here that the dignity of life and inherent worth of each person (which is the heart of the Lotus Sutra...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

why bother worrying about the gakki and the what if's and the what they do....unless you are looking to be a sgi leader...forget the political crap...study real Buddhism...put your mind in that arena and that arena alone.. Ex SGI people are mostly malcontents...i left it to further see what this Bu...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

That Soka Gakkai stuff is more likely crafted by and towards the preferences of the reigning global oligarchy than in contrast to it, I think. The indirect, concatenative, and hidden implications of words and ideas is interesting to unpack in regard to subjects like this. Why do you say that? What ...

Re: Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. I knew Shijo Kingo was there when Nichiren was sentenced to execution and Nichiren says he would never forget it. I guess part of me reads this and forgets exactly how real it was, a benefit (or misfortune maybe?) I have for not living at this time in Japan! It wa...

Nichiren's relationship with Shijo Kingo?

I was reading the Three Kinds of Treasure gosho yesterday and was moved by the powerful declarations Nichiren has towards Shijo Kingo such as, "If you should fall into hell for some grave offense, no matter how Shakyamuni Buddha might urge me to become a Buddha, I would refuse; I would rather go to ...

Thread moved to the SGI sub-forum.

Personal note - I am not a teacher in any tradition. Just share what I learn.
Thanks, Q. Sorry to put it in the wrong place.

And you are very good at sharing what you learn. That's something I respect and obviously many of us have appreciated it.

Re: Continuing a practice on my own

Lotus : I note you're really busy with grad school. Times like this allow little room for activities, so it may be a good thing to step back from the organization temporarily. The guy who taught me the most used to say that when you're in school, study is your activity, because it's preparation for...

Re: Continuing a practice on my own

I once saw something odd back in the day....Some guy had been meditating on the NMHRK as a mantra type meditation...you silently chant in your head and watch it and try to focus solely on the mantra....i know NMHRK is not a mantra...anyway this guy did it for five years on his own without knowing a...

Re: Continuing a practice on my own

You make a good point, thank you. I definitely agree having the community makes things easier to some degree. The 'sangha' is a part of practice in a way. And I'd hate to miss out on people like that. I am asked pretty frequently to give experiences and presentations because I am a good speaker (and...

Re: What would Nichiren have to say about Catholicism and what it teaches?

I think he would find it even more absurd that Brahmanism. I'd imagine he'd look at the history of Christianity with a thought to how it could be an expedient teaching. I've often thought Christianity, taken in a contemplative way, to be an expedient means. I especially like the work of Richard Roh...

Re: What would Nichiren have to say about Catholicism and what it teaches?

There is an interesting relation between Nichiren and christianity- not with Nichiren as such, but this book is a reprint of a 100yr old collaboration between a Nichiren and Catholic scholar, possibly the first significant translation of the story into english. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

Continuing a practice on my own

I dropped off for a while I'm sorry. I am very busy with grad school. I've decided to take a break from SGI, I'm not sure it will be permanent or temporary. I'm still practicing and encouraging my friends to practice and to attend meetings if it is helpful. I am also still helping to moderate the Di...
