Re: Clarification on terms

Off topic technical question, I have quoted Malcom's post in my reply (above) but the quote does not appear in a separate box, what am I doing wrong?

Re: Clarification on terms

Byang is what is being rendered as "pure," "chub" is what is being rendered as "perfect." What they are squabbling about is what is termed "the basis," which in one class of Dzogchen teachings is called "byang chub sems," or "bodhicitta." They are taking this terminology from Adriano Clemente. Byang...

Re: Clarification on terms

I am wondering if anyone, in this context, could guess at what the Tibetan terms could be that are being translated as 'pure' and 'perfect' Can you provide a link? Your best bet would be to go to the FB page 'mahasiddis, mahamudra and dzogchen' , and scroll through. You cant really miss it. The dis...

Re: Clarification on terms

Thanks for your replies. Would 'primordial essence' also be a legitimate translation of kadrag?

Clarification on terms

I have been following with interest some debates happening at the mahasiddis, mahamudra and dzogchen FB group. I am, at best, an inferior practitioner of the Gelug school so my summation of the positions may be way off but here it is; one group says things like 'we should view everything as pure' an...

Re: Vajrasattva Question(s)

From a Gelug point of view, H.E. the 104th Ganden Tripa gave a Vajrasattva jenang in Austria last year that could be taken as HYT or kriya. I believe he also said it was a sort of 'general purpose' empowerment that could be used as a basis for practicing any specific form of Vajrasattva, for example...

Re: Statue of Buddha in bedroom

One of my teachers mentioned that it is better to avoid doing this. Not because the Buddhas would be offended or should be feared, but because it helps to build an appropriate level of respect.

Re: Is this an accurate summation of tantra?

I've noticed that some people follow a non-Buddhist Weltanschauung and try to fit their Buddhist practise into that. Not saying this is the case here, just something I've observed. It's something I've been thinking about a lot lately, because it rubs me the wrong way, rightly or wrongly, and I am n...

Re: Is this an accurate summation of tantra?

I was recently told that 'Tantra is all about using a variety of deity forms, mostly from Hinduism, in order to embody their archetypes' I would be grateful if some of you would evaluate this statement for me. There are very few Buddhists where I live so I am happy to be able to engage with them wh...

Re: Does Ganden Lha Gyama require lung?

No, but it is certainly helpful. However, the oral commentary requires HYT initiation. Shaun :namaste: Hi Shaun, Are you sure about this? Lama Zopa Rinpoche was due to give the lung and commentary at my local centre earlier this year. There was no requirement to have a HYT initiation to attend. Is ...

Re: HHDL Avalokiteshvara empowerment

This is a big topic that I don't feel qualified to answer but I can say that the sadhana I referred to above doesn't actually have a self generation. It has a front generation that is used to purify, like some Vajrasattva practices.

Re: Questions about empowerments and jenang

You are so lucky to have this opportunity! I was hoping to meet H.E. Ling Rinpoche as he was due to come to Australia after he finished his NZ visit but the virus has put a stop to that. As others have mentioned you are eligible to receive the jenang but will most likely not have permission to gener...

Re: Tonglen

One approach is to take the suffering of others, visualised in the form of black smoke or light, into your heart where it chips away at the 'I' (visualised as a small ball of black light). I guess the idea is if you practice taking on the sufferings of others they become more important than your 'I'...
