Re: Belonging to a sect or school

If you study under someone, respect them, but feel free to form your own opinion. If you feel unable to fully trust yourself, then find a suitable teacher and put your trust in them. Belonging to a tradition is motivating for many people. The community aspect and capacity for ready deference is com...

Re: Asked to join Christian Prayer; Need Advice Please

It's actually not solved. What about the next person who is a Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Atheist? As someone with a non-Christian Jewish background, it's very important to stand up for minority religions or the desire not to participate at all. If you say 'sorry, I'm a Buddhist, they'll respect you.'...

Re: Asked to join Christian Prayer; Need Advice Please

I don't get why some Buddhist have such an aversion to other religions and their practices. As Buddhists, aren't we supposed to be practicing the letting go of our attachments and aversions? It seems to me that the most Buddhist thing to do, if someone ask you to pray with them, is to sit there and...

Re: Asked to join Christian Prayer; Need Advice Please

Thanks everyone for your help. I am in the US, I know about the law and my rights.but I feel that not participating will make other people mad and I personally dont feel the need to want to deal with that.. I was part of the first prayer. I meditate and visualized compassion arising since they spoke...

Exercise your constitutional/legal right...as much as they can too... apart from this part, make sure your work is up to par for what you're paid for, no company can simply dismiss one based on non participation of religious activity that is against one's will or else it will be a cause for legal a...

Re: Asked to join Christian Prayer; Need Advice Please

Don't be offensive, they have their beliefs, and you're in their house. You can just be polite and keep your head down during their prayers. You might not know their prayers, no one is expecting you to be Christian, are they? What if you were just atheist or muslim? Is actively participating mandat...

Asked to join Christian Prayer; Need Advice Please

Well i will be working at a place where they are most, if not all, Christians (theists) of some sort. I really do not want to seem "offensive" but neither do i want to make my believes public. I have faith in the buddhas teaching but i left christianity and left theism behind. Now it is 12...

Re: Morning Practice: How do YOU start?

I took a break from Christian forum and came to Dharma Wheel - since then I have been thinking about the universal functions of the dharma. Also influenced by my "interpretation" of a couple of buddhist books I've read. In one book, chapter 6 Establishing the Dharma was what the Buddha di...

Morning Practice: How do YOU start?

As the subject of this post says, i am wondering what 'routine' do you follow for those who practice. Either in the morning of at night. Chants, prostrations, meditation, recitations... I would like to know. I am curious as to how other fellow Buddhist practice in their daily life at home. All answe...

Silent Illumination & Vipassana

Hello forum I have again to ask what i believe to be a simple question. As always this assumption tends to be wrong. My inquiry is what is the difference or similarities in the two methods of meditation. Is Vipassana like Silent Illumination (Shikantaza) or do they have both similarities and differe...

Shaving my head, reconnecting and giving my all to practice.

Hello i started my journey this last summer, and I posted one or two posts here on this forum. From there i tend to lurk  yes, i'm truly a professional at that. Anyways due to the title of topic, i know some must think this for ordination. So i should begin my clearing things up. I am not or...
